Parents call the cops on teens distributing a banned book

Around two weeks ago parents in the Idaho school district of Meridian successfully campaigned to remove a novel from its 10th grade reading curriculum . The book was entitled The Absolutely True Diary and it won a A National Book Award. It tells the tale of a Native American teenager who decides to attend an all-white high school outside of his reservation and has themes such as making sense of race, and sexual discovery.
Students who were utterly fed up with a few parents who had a problem with the book decided to take action. The teens started a petition to have the book reinstated. They collected an impressive 350 signatures, but the school remained firm.
A local indie bookstore heard about the students plight and started a crowdfunding campaign to buy a book for each of the 350 kids who signed the petition. It workedthe campaign raised $3,400, enough for a book per kid.
Rediscovered Books and the students distributed all but 20 books to the teens that came to claim them, but here is where things got interesting. A few parents were livid that the students went out on their own and ended up getting the books that they worked so hard to ban. Police told local news channel KBOI they had been called by someone concerned about teenagers picking up a copy of the book without having a parents permission.
That is right, a few parents actually called in the cops because a few hundred teens wanted to get a book that the school had banned....
Be sure you read the ending!

(86,775 posts)They have an extensive banned book list. And Sherman Alexi is from the Coeur d'Alene rez... but his books and movies are awesome and he has a wonderful sense of humor.
In Idaho, being owned and operated by the lds cult, is a strange place if you are an open minded individual who is capable of and actually employs independent cognition. Teens are only allowed to listen to cult leaders and their parents... all of whom are sadly and seriously misguided.

(86,775 posts)I lived in Idaho for 14 years and I knew about them in all those states before I moved there... somehow I managed. I guess it's because there is so much natural beauty in this region that, at least for now, a person can get away from everyone else for a spell and charge their batteries so to speak.
The concept that separation of church and state is written into the Constitution, or any variation of it is never spoken of in most places as though it doesn't exist, is tabu or brushed off as not important.
So my big mission this election season, whenever confronted with religion in a political discussion, is to bring up this point and maintain it as a driver of the discussion, every blasted time. I plan to make the most adamant of opponents feel as though they had produced a nasty fart in church by the end of it.

Like you,we do say what we feel about the separation of Religion and State, and the use of Non-Profit entities to avoid paying Income Taxes or State and Local Taxes.
