Donald Trump Has Turned Away Hundreds of American Workers to Hire Cheap Foreign Labor Instead

No one will bring our jobs back from China and Mexico like Trump, Donald Trump recently wrote, in a Facebook post. The GOP front-runners commitment to restoring employment opportunities that Americans have lost to developing countries is one of the cornerstones of his candidacy. But where Trump has had the power to replace American workers with foreign ones, he has done so with gusto.
Since 2010, nearly 300 United States residents have applied for jobs at Trumps Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, but only 17 were hired. Meanwhile, Trump pursued more than 500 visas for foreign workers at the resort, the New York Times reports.
Trumps fondness for guest workers was brought to national attention by Reuters last summer, when the news service reported that the Donald had sought visas for over 1,000 foreign laborers since 2000. The Times investigation shows that those visas werent pursued for a lack of domestic applicants.
The only reason they wouldnt get a callback is that they werent qualified, for some reason, Trump insisted, in an interview with the paper. There are very few qualified people during the high season in the area.

(133 posts)I have been telling this to anyone who will listen. This article is all true. There are many, many qualified workers in the area but Trump prefers the guest worker.
My son has worked at Trump's resort for 7 years. He now has a position with more responsibilities than when he started. He has never received a raise in wages and he gets no benefits at all - no health insurance, no sick days, nothing. He is one of the very few workers who is an American citizen. My son will never vote for Trump.

(5,902 posts)Not to mention using friendly judges (most of whom should have recused themselves) to write off his bad debts 4 times. The world must look like one big prostitute to the Donald.
My best wishes to your incredible son, jopacaco. Here's hoping for bigger and better things for him - far from con men like Trump.

(1,668 posts)That's the way the laws currently work in this country.
Are we expecting businesses to act in the best interests of American workers out of a sense of patriotism? Businesses will do what's best for the bottom line and if that happens to be something that is bad for our country then we need politicians to pass laws preventing it.
Frankly this reminds me of Clinton's "cut it out" admonition to Wall Street. Businesses aren't going to "cut it out" if there's money to be made from not cutting it out. They need to be made to comply to regulations, something that isn't going to happen anytime soon as long as corporations own both political parties.

(10,495 posts)That's why they want to get rid of the EPA. It's not enough that they don't have a budget to actually inspect for violations, or that the regulatory agencies are run by appointees who come from the industries they regulate, meaning nothing gets regulated. They want to get rid of the EPA in case they ever have the capability and desire to ACTUALLY regulate!

(168 posts)Recently in the congressional budget deal, H-2 employees (used mainly in the hospitality and golf course industry) was increased from 65,000 to 250,000. This is outrageous that people like Trump are profiteering because they don't want to pay Americans a decent wage.

(1,615 posts)employers would rather socialize the cost of letting the elderly and disabled not work and pocket the profits for themselves.
there are plenty of people who can do these resort jobs: they just prefer to hire immigrants. they complain less about the substandard wages, abusive labor practices, and high cost of living. where i live, most of them are college students with rich parents or countries who socialize the cost of education (therefore lending less urgency to the need to make a living wage).
hypocritically they're also held to a lower standard than natives, which i would assume is bad for business but maybe not.
americans aren't lazy. they're just not willing to work for no future.

(1,016 posts)All GOP donors take advantage of those visas just look at Disneyland, silicon valley. Most of these are GOP supporters.
That's like asking why no one has bought up the issue of cutting the minimum wage in the Democratic debates.

(168 posts)They recently increased the number of H-2b from 66,000 to 250,000. I have been wondering when the main stream media will ask the Donald about his conflict of stated interest. Hope this will be done, soon!
