The Bernie Sanders question

The Bernie Sanders question

FINDING PATTERNS If things play out according to form, most Bernie Sanders voters will end up backing Hillary Clinton. But very little in this election has played out to form.

By Harry Bruinius, Staff writer
MAY 6, 2016

The script should feel familiar to Hillary Clinton. In 2008, after all, she was Bernie Sanders, pushing the presumptive nominee, Barack Obama, well after the delegate chase seemed lost.

But as Mrs. Clinton moves inexorably toward the Democratic nomination this summer, there is some question about whether this election will continue to follow that 2008 script.

In 2008, Clinton threw her considerable clout behind Mr. Obama, unifying the party for the general election.

Will Senator Sanders do the same? And perhaps more important, will Sanders’s supporters be inclined to listen?

Party unity? Did he seek out Bush donors at all? Did he tell them he represented their values?

responsibility of being the President for all Americans, not just those who voted for him. (I won't go into my feeling about how the Republicans tried to nullify his entire Presidency, as it would be a lengthy diatribe and is a separate issue entirely, just something that sticks in my head as a terrible repayment, for which I am embarrassed and humiliated).

into the political system. If Hillary is the nominee, I doubt very many will stay, and the way the DNC has pushed Hillary and did everything they could to derail Bernie, I doubt they will feel any loyalty to the Democratic Party.

This is what Hillary supporters don't understand. If Bernie had been treated fairly, all around, Bernie supporters would not be angry. We would have said, rightly, that he just couldn't reach people and probably have turned around and held our noses to support Hillary. Right now, the anger is justified, and whether that anger will turn people to Trump, or turn to apathy or turn to Hillary, is any one's guess.

Clinton's sign read: "It's the economy, stupid".

This year the sign reads: "It's the establishment, stupid".

and projection on the part of Bernie's supporters? NO! We get accused of being "mean" to Hillary when her record is pointed out. Moreso when she flips her positions (NAFTA, TPP gay marriage, etc., ETC.) strictly for political expediency, depending on her audience. Bernie has cut to the core on the underlying problems of campaign finance and income inequality, and Hillary is wrapped inexorably with those. So what's her supporters gonna do? They too, are stuck with her record, but it's much easier to blast Bernie. The irony is by far and away most progressive democrats totally agree with him on most every issue. And most people of any political persuasion agree she should release the transcripts of her speeches.
