An Effing Mess: Republicans Grow Pessimistic About Defeating Obama
For months GOP insiders have been expecting an Obama win, but their despair has reached a new low as reported by John Heilemann in New York Magazine, A loss is what the GOPs political class now expects. Six months before this thing got going, every Republican I know was saying, Were gonna win, were gonna beat Obama, says former Reagan strategist Ed Rollins. Now even those whove endorsed Romney say, My God, what a fucking mess.
How badly has the Republican Party f**ked this up?
Usually, a political party uses their nominating process to build good will and positive momentum for their future standard bearer. However, the exact opposite thing is happening to the Republican Party in 2012. The latest Democracy Corps poll showed that the instead of helping douse the fire caused by the unpopular actions of the GOP controlled House, the Republican presidential candidates, especially Mitt Romney, have made things worse by spending tens of millions of dollars on negative advertising, and are pushing their party towards collapse.

Then I figure the conservatives are voting just for the
anti-gay and anti-abortion issues.
I have a very smart cousin who can't see past the con. As
she and I discussed this last Xmass every time I got close
to making a point she would get really upset and divert the discussion. There must be some sort of denial thing going
on. Also, she may have just been focused on "winning" the
argument.
Oh well, try again next year.

(17 posts)For the next six months we could talk about why Democrats haven't got a cogent response to Obama fronting this atrocious mortgage fraud settlement. Or Obama's proposed cut in corporate income tax. Or his failure to rein in the lawless state of Israel. Or Obama's penchant for persecuting whistleblowers. Or his failure to curb the imperial war machine and security state.
Reversing DADT was OK, though it was wedded to a medieval tax bill and thus was triangulation par excellence, but other than that and a half-baked health-care plan that corporations didn't object to, can someone tell me why Democrats still support Obama? And the ridiculous field of Republican hopefuls isn't an answer.
You know things are bad when two Supremes break with stare decisis to point out that Citizens United was a very bad decision. A little hope might be had by some honesty in discussing where we now are.

(1,372 posts)You're right. There are so many things that need to be
understood, revised and tweaked that it boggles my mind.
Let's get a Democratic majority and then hammer on them
to start to move things in a positive direction. You bring up
many good topics.

(17 posts)Thanks for the reply, but getting a Democratic majority before pushing for a policy shift is the cart before the horse. It's time to go 1789 on the political system. Let them catch up to us for a change.

Let the public be doused with the dismal truth about the Republicans and the 1%. Get all the skeletons out. Sure, a solid 30% will stay with the Republicans, but the rest of the country is starting to catch on.
I love that all the Republicans have to do to go negative is tell the truth about each other.

(30,058 posts)I know many will never vote for Obama simply because he is black. Some would never vote for him because he does not have a R behind his name. Now for the real truth those who know he is the best candidate has to get out and vote, it is never over until it is over. WE HAVE TO VOTE!!!!!!

(2,983 posts)I'm not going to count on them staying that way though. There's still a good bit of time left before the election. A lot can happen in the months ahead. Good to be confident, but I won't be overconfident. I think Obama will still need plenty of assistance.

(5,364 posts)While I'm heartened by the absolute consistency of the GOP's wingnuttery, I'm also alarmed ( and this is anecdotal ) by the sheer visceral loathing of Obama by some people I've spoken with. Some have admitted that the GOP front runners are "out there" in many ways but still don't care because they think the more extreme positions will be more or less blunted once actually in office. That may well be true, but I sure don't want to find out and ride out a GOP president, come what may.

THAT is a level of stupid that baffles me far beyond the anti-life stuff. If you're abused enough, in the right ways, and have that potential, you end up anti-life. But how you end up being someone who believes mass media???

(9,600 posts)The GOP just doesn't have bad and crazy candidates, the GOP just cannot govern. The Republican's policies are bad.
The economy didn't just crash under a Republican president, it crashed under Republican policies. It crashed with low taxes. It crashed with deregulated markets. It crashed with huge restrictions on union activity. It crashed with massive cuts in environmental regulations. It crashed with lowered trade barriers. It crashed with big fat Pentagon spending.

(1,862 posts)The rabid anti-O haters will most definitely vote. That's about 30% we can count on right there.
Moderates and Independents will vote more or less for Obama, if they vote at all.
The great gift we've been given this primary season will be the fallout from the "social issues" that the R candidates have been wallowing in for the last few weeks. This could get women to the voting booths in large numbers.
Prediction: it'll be no landslide. Especially since the RNC knows how to fudge voting machines.

Although Obama doesn't have baggage that Clinton did, the Repigs won't have any problem trying to impeach him for some bullshit reason--i.e. running for president when he's "not a citizen. . ."
