(102,283 posts)and from an early age knew all the lore about them, the local sites associated with them and their burial spots. While my parents/grandparents never made them out to be anything more than "infamous outlaws", looking back, the "hero" myth was very very strong.
Today, as I look at the racism, anti-government sentiment, and sometimes violence of the far "RW", I tend to think we've not come very far in terms of who we make our "heroes".... sigh....
