There were bogeymen everywhere, in the Middle East and in Obamacare and big government and the deficit and the bailout and the budget and, well, that just seemed like the short list. Decent people were supposed to fear all of that. Only you know what really scares the Republicans to death these days?

Their own candidates.

Oh, if you’re a Republican, this process now comes straight to you from the great Walt Kelly and the most famous line to ever come out of the Pogo cartoon strip: We have met the enemy and it is us.

These people continue to think that the economy can save them. Whose economy . . . Greece’s?

They have taken the party of Lincoln and Reagan, the party that produced Jacob Javits in this state and Fiorello LaGuardia and turned it into a festival of mind-numbing mediocrity. They all want to say they are speaking for Real Americans and seem more out of touch than any group in the history of American politics. Starting with a front-runner who, when asked if he likes NASCAR says that, yeah, he knows a lot of guys who own cars.

It is why the impossible happens, even as Super Tuesday has come and gone: This race gets dumber as it goes. And goes. And goes. And makes you start to root for them all to go to the Republican Convention in Tampa in August without any of them having enough delegates to have closed the thing out.

But he really has a knack for breaking down the issues and cutting right to the heart of them. I love reading his stuff.
