NJ elections 2018: Why our primaries matter nationwide and what to know before you vote
From Alpine to Cape May, New Jersey contests for U.S. House seats this year could help determine whether Democrats pick up the 23 Republican-held districts they need to win a majority.
Democrats in Washington are targeting all five New Jersey districts that elected Republicans in 2016. That's a major switch in strategy from past years, when so-called "safe" districts in the Garden State were ignored.
But in special elections and state legislative races around the country, Democrats have made surprising gains with voters in upscale, well-educated suburbs like the traditional Republican strongholds across New Jersey. A Monmouth University poll of New Jersey voters in April showed Democrats with a 19-point lead over Republicans in a generic "which party do you want to run Congress" question, and the biggest growth came in GOP-held districts.
"These New Jersey races are targets because you have a combination of open seats and a positive political environment for Democrats," said Nathan Gonzalez, editor of the political handicapping website Inside Elections. "Democrats just won the governorship, and Hillary Clinton still did well, even though she lost the presidential race to Trump."
