Dems wrestle with hardball tactics in Supreme Court battle
From Politico:
The liberal base wants Democrats to grind the Senate to a halt, but moderates arent on board. Democrats are grasping for a Supreme Court strategy.
A day after Justice Anthony Kennedys retirement announcement, alarmed liberal activists are demanding the hardest possible fight against Donald Trumps next Supreme Court nominee. But moderate Democrats are in no rush to stake out any firm position until the president taps a nominee, and the caucus next steps remain murky.
A handful of red-state Democratic senators began talking privately on Thursday about carving their own path on the confirmation. Other top Democrats are already shifting away from their initial demand to delay a confirmation vote until after the midterm elections and toward a push highlighting the record of Trumps still-unnamed pick on abortion, health care and more.
Senate Democrats want the Supreme Court battle waged on the policy stakes, not the procedural tactics at play. But the partys outraged base is prodding them to do everything they can to slow down Trumps nominee, despite their paltry procedural options after the GOP quashed the filibuster for Supreme Court nominations last year.

(4,609 posts)niceties or conflicted worries about civility and the fabled high road. They stand and vote united. They steamroll and shout down anything and anyone in their path. The only thing they understand or respect is being (figuratively) hit in the head with a baseball bat. The sooner Democrats realize that the old norms and quaint concepts like law-and-order no longer apply in Trump World 2018 and start playing hardball, the better.

(16,375 posts)Dems should have been shouting TREASON! CONSPIRACY!!! COLLUSION!!! without letup. It's the truth and could save the country. The Rs never let up with their spinning of lies. They've been doing it since Bill Clinton and it's always, always worked. If the Dems had started calling the cabal and enablers out loudly and constantly, we might be in a much better place.
