Chuck Schumer: Our Rights Hang in the Balance

*While the number of Democrats in the Senate is not a majority, the number of senators who believe in protections for those with pre-existing conditions and women’s reproductive rights is. Given this vacancy, the best way to defend those rights is for a bipartisan majority in the Senate to lock arms and reject a Supreme Court nominee who would overturn them. It will not happen on its own. It requires the public’s focus on these issues, and its pressure on the Senate.

If you do not want a Supreme Court Justice who will overturn Roe v. Wade and undo the Affordable Care Act, tell your senators they should not vote for a candidate from Mr. Trump’s preordained list. Democrat, Republican, independent, liberal or conservative — we should all want a more representative process for choosing the next Supreme Court justice.'

So this is 'our' approach?

Without having the majority in the Senate, there is no way to stop the confirmation of whomever Trump nominates. All the Democrats can do is solicit public support against a right-wing appointee, and to try to slow the process down.

Its a statement saying We Cannot Do it alone. Use your voices, demand from your representatives..

I'm not getting whre his statement is worthy of condemnation.

We all have a role to play.

when the balance of the court and Roe is at stake. It would be much harder to nuke it now. It was extremely foolish to waste the filibuster on Gorsuch when he was just replacing another conservative (Scalia).

They also could have had a deal with moderate Republicans (Collins, Murkowski, McCain...) to not nuke the filibuster for any further Trump nominees in exchange for Gorsuch not being filibustered. Trump would need 60 votes now. But the Democrats couldn't agree.

Its not all their fault though, there was enormous pressure from the left to filibuster Gorsuch as revenge for Merrick Garland. That was pure emotion and anger though, strategically it was an incredibly stupid thing to do.
