2. I just hope Newsom finds a way to eliminate some of the red tape

and speed up the process. The first week after a job loss is unpaid in California anyway, and it generally takes a few weeks to get the ball rolling. Many times a phone interview is scheduled weeks after a layoff before any benefits are forthcoming. The state really makes a newly unemployed person sweat it out before the debit card with the weekly benefit ($450 max) arrives. It isn't the most user friendly system.
