How safe do you feel with Trump at the helm?

By Froma Harrop / syndicated columnist

George W. Bush and Barack Obama both had Gen. Qassem Soleimani in their gunsights. Neither ordered the trigger pulled because of the enormous risks involved in killing one of Iran’s top leaders. In listing the possible responses to recent Iranian provocations, U.S. military commanders told President Trump that doing this would be the most dangerous.

Trump did it on Friday. Iran predictably returned fire with dire threats to U.S. interests. Trump then tweeted in big capital letters that he would retaliate against the retaliation by bombing Iran’s cultural sites, among other targets. That would be a war crime, so his secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, said Trump had no intention of doing that. Soon after, Trump tweeted, again in big capital letters, that, yes, he would.

Then Iran announced plans to go full speed ahead on developing nuclear weapons. Iraqi lawmakers voted to expel American forces from their country, and Trump answered with a big-letter threat to destroy Iraq’s economy with crippling sanctions. And oh, yes, he’s sending American troops back into the Middle East.

All of this happened in the course of a three-day weekend. Are you, fellow Americans, feeling safer today than on Thursday? Probably not. Your ship of state is sailing on wild seas with a captain who may not be well in the head or know anything about sailing.

BECAUSE he is at the "helm".

This engorged boil on America's butt is the biggest threat we have right now is him and his sycophants, a threat bigger than this country has ever seen, ever and I know all about threats, people are saying.

It's like being a hen and having the fox as the landlord of the chicken coop. One feels more like a meal in that sense.

Lose biggly.

I see more of these wag the dog incidents and hope Iran restrains itself more. The whole world knows he is an idiot and hopes he is voted out in November.

I truly believe that if I wasn't taking something (CBD) to handle my anxiety, I'd be a candidate for a padded cell.

Can we get out from under this or is the dictatorship already set? What will the USA be like in 4 years, what will the world, how will he fuck us all over? How will all the people living on SS and getting Medicare survive this, how will the poor survive and even the working class is emperiled by these rw fascists.

Terrified of the ignorance, the lies, the recklessness with national security, the favoritism of dictators over our democratic allies, the fawning over Putin and Kim Jong-Un, the priority of personal interests and power over the constitution and any hint of human decency. Also of the Republican party's complete complicity and acquiescence to this serial criminal behavior, aiding and abetting Trump, tearing up our system of checks and balances, like their Dear Leader putting partisan interests and personal greed above the good of the country and the future of the planet. And, most terrifying of all: the fact that, even after more than 3 years of this nightmare, ~40% of the electorate still approve of the "job" that Trump is doing.
