Why A Biden Administration Shouldn't Turn The Page On The Trump Era

The Obama–Biden administration wanted to move forward rather than hold Wall Street bankers and CIA torturers accountable. If elected, Biden should follow FDR’s playbook and expose his predecessor’s corruption and mismanagement instead.

As Joe Biden looks ahead to the presidency, he should look back as well.

When he first entered the White House, as Barack Obama’s vice president, Democrats faced a crisis nearly as large as the combined health and economic panics confronting them now. But back then, Obama’s team had little interest in holding accountable the individuals and institutions that created those problems. Whether it was Wall Street bankers or CIA torturers, Obama insisted he wanted to “turn the page” and “look forward as opposed to looking backwards.” A range of wrongdoers paid no price and, as a result, many went on to make the same mistakes again.

If Democrats actually want to move on from the Trump era, they’ll first have to provide a real reckoning with the past. Not everything can be probed, of course. But a deep dive into the administration’s mishandling of the coronavirus and other crises, plus its wider pattern of incompetence and corruption, would be warranted.

On this point, a look back at the most successful Democratic administration in American history—Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal—is illustrative.

Taking power three years into the Great Depression, the Roosevelt administration famously wrought fundamental changes to American political, economic, and social life. Yet that only happened because Roosevelt and others first convinced the country that fundamental changes were desperately needed. As historian Eric Rauchway has recently reminded us, FDR spent the 1932 campaign making the case for a drastic new direction. But Roosevelt wasn’t alone.

Obama made a mistake by choosing not to pursue Bush administration corruption. That only emboldened the Republicans and led us to where we are today.

to be dealt with, usually severely. If nobody is standing up for people who are wronged, then we have the same situation we have with police killing black people with impunity. If the wrongdoers get to skate with glee, the people and their loyalty to each other and to country suffer.

When they are removed, the ability to use the justice department and other agencies to hide misdeeds still unknown will be gone. Just think of all the yet to be discovered horrors. We will no longer have to rely on leaks and facts will gush out like a geyser. The depth of the corruption must be unearthed and shared with all to leave no doubt.

...application of the rule of law.

This is worse than Aaron Burr being a traitor, since Burr didn't quite make it to the Presidency.

Trump did.

He must not be allowed to seek asylum in Moscow.
