Opinion: How Biden just made Trump's life a lot more complicated

Barack and Michelle Obama set a high bar with their 2020 convention speeches. Contrary to expectations, Joe Biden exceeded it.

The degree of difficulty was considerable. No presidential nominee in our history has given a convention address to a largely empty room. And this was a man who was finally clinching the nomination 32 years after he first ran for president.

But Joe Biden gave a speech for the ages: clear, focused and fiery. Like most nominees, he weaved the story of his life into the story of the nation. It was a story of setbacks and personal pain -- projected forward to give others comfort from their troubles. Biden also may have benefitted from repeated Republican attacks on his mental acuity, which lowered expectations for Biden's performance. What viewers saw instead was a candidate firmly in control and ready to lead the country out of its morass - not because he thinks he alone can fix it, but because he knows how government works and he believes in the essential goodness of the American people.

There were clear contrasts and slashing attacks against President Donald Trump (contrary to early predictions that he wouldn't)-- focused on Trump's failure to combat the coronavirus and his fundamental lack of empathy.

As highlighted by Amy’s comments re her first Senate speech...nothing prepares you to give an impassioned speech to an empty room like being a US Senator.

I think joe was in his element. And I like the flow without breaks for applause lines.

On the other hand, I don't understand why these pundits are journalists were so surprised that he gave a lucid and impassioned speech. He'd done a really good job at the 2012 convention, and I've seen him repeatedly (but granted only on-line) speechify on various policy issues these past months. The guy's sharp, contrary to general impressions.

Granted, he's not the world's best debater, though he improved a lot over the course of the primaries. I think it's the quickness of live debate (1 minute to answer complex questions) that must bring back old stuttering fears that he has overcome in so many ways, usually in more intimate settings.

I'm frankly glad he will not be subjected to the crazy rigors of touring the country to eat hot dogs and shake hands these next months. He should be rested, prepared, and ready to take on the worst-debater-in-the-world liar-in-chief in the fall.

But, as President Obama said, "Trump isn't willing to learn". Anything. The guy who is the most unfit for any office at any level stated he "alone can fix it". Fix what? Gilligan crashed the Minnow again. This time with 330 million passengers on it.

Take away all of Trump's character and personality flaws--his ability and willingness to commit daily crimes--his evilness and apathy.

All that's left is an overstuffed suit and an outrageously long phallic red tie. He's even overcompensating for his physical shortcomings (not to mention the combover and the theft of Bozo's makeup).

He is the epitome of an empty suit. Unfortunately, all those negative attributes above come with the package.

WTF is wrong with 40% of our voters?
