MANILA, Philippines Delegates attending an international conference in the Philippines capital may not see what they came to discuss: abject poverty.
A makeshift, temporary wall has been erected across a bridge on a road from the airport to downtown Manila that hides a sprawling slum along a garbage-strewn creek.
Presidential spokesman Ricky Carandang defended the walls installation, saying Thursday any country will do a little fixing up before a guest comes.

(8,244 posts)A lot of these protests from all over the world all look so similar, and the issues are so similar. Basically saying quit robbing the commons and the common treasury to benefit a few who already have great wealth. And quit poisoning our water and air. Similar issues everywhere.

(53,521 posts)It's all a show, it's PR. I'm sure none of these delegates are poor themselves, they are upper middle class and rich people who "care" about the poor in so far as it helps their reputation and soothes their conscience. If they really cared about the poor they would all be Leftists and their meeting would be suppressed.
