'How Did We Get Here?' A Call For An Evangelical Reckoning On Trump
As fallout continues from the deadly siege on the U.S. Capitol, Ed Stetzer, head of the Billy Graham Center at Wheaton College, has a message for his fellow evangelicals: it's time for a reckoning.
Evangelicals, he says, should look at how their own behaviors and actions may have helped fuel the insurrection. White evangelicals overwhelmingly supported President Trump in the 2020 election.
Some in the protest crowd raised signs with Christian symbolism and phrases.
"Part of this reckoning is: How did we get here? How were we so easily fooled by conspiracy theories?" he tells NPR's Rachel Martin. "We need to make clear who we are. And our allegiance is to King Jesus, not to what boasting political leader might come next."

(49,036 posts)Hypocritical evangelicals and christians embraced an uncharitable, non-churchgoing, child-caging, adultering, lying, grifting, failed gambling house operator.
He used a bible and a church as props. They talk about money-changers in the temple and they don't make the connection to the casino tycoon.
Further, a case can be made that christians are the most likely group to be fooled among religions.
More, there is a case that religious people are more likely to be fooled in the first place.

(9,995 posts)to be fair, has kinda been on the off side of the fascists....they haven't come out robustly against, but they haven't really been on the opposite side either. They have been SILENT, which is complicity in itself. That condemns them, as Bonhoeffer said. But at least they aren't Liberty.

(14,176 posts)No counter position from some other evangelical Christian leaders. No one challenged the position that Christians MUST support the child separating, lying, foul mouthed, sexual predator.
I wasn't expecting it, but was hoping. Even if just because I have close family that is in that camp. I used to be too. I just wanted and still want, some highly respected Christian leader, or artist, singer to speak out. Mostly to hopefully change some of those family members minds on Trump. And the fact that there is no leader filling that role, just solidifies my rejection of this religion. The group think is so strong. Their religion is so black and white, good or bad, that everything has to be divided only by two. So they choose Trump. That means anyone not choosing him is following the Devil.

(31 posts)The "call for an evangelical reckoning" is AT LEAST 40 years overdue... I was a kid and when all the 'moral majority' cra*p started as a political power grab, and since then it's all been a slippery downward slope into hell for their integrity, ethics and humanity. There've been jokes about the American Taliban and Y'All Queda for many years, but they aren't funny anymore 'cuz that's what we're actually dealing with here. BLIND faith, political ambition, greed and corruption camoflaged as patriotism, hypocrisy and outright cruelty all mixed up into a "quagmire of righteousness"....TEAR IT ALL DOWN, it's too broken to fix.
