Senators voting to impeach represent 61.6% of the population. (202,119,286 people)
Senators voting against represent 38.2% of the population. (125,414,488 people)
Senators voting for impeachment represent 76.7 million more people than senators voting against
The only way to reverse minority rule is through big structural reforms like abolishing Electoral College, eliminating filibuster, ending partisan gerrymandering, enshrining right to vote in Constitution & giving statehood to Washington DC & Puerto Rico
End the filibuster and Pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act & For The People Act.

(1,735 posts)I want to know how they justify the fact that they've been rigging the system to impose minority rule over the vast majority of Americans.

(9,273 posts)They do not care one bit that the MAJORITY of Americans dont want what theyre selling. They dont have to. Tyranny of the minority is baked into the Constitution and I wish there was a way to get rid of it. Catch-22: we cant end tyranny of the minority precisely because of tyranny of the minority (2/3 of states needed for a Constitutional amendment, the filibuster, etc).

(17,958 posts)but in my mind, for the Republic to survive, we've got to at least try to eliminate our founder's mistakes.

(17,958 posts)"Our system was wisely constructed to protect the minority from the tyranny of the majority." I've heard it many times. Tyranny. The only thing these people know about tyranny is how to impose it. No. Unfair apportionment of congressional seats in any way, shape or form is undemocratic. Period. Full stop. If you don't like the will of the majority, than convince more people you're right. Otherwise, shut the hell up. Tyranny? The Bill of Rights protects them from that, NOT the Senate OR the Electoral College. Those are gross errors made by the founders by compromising with those who didn't particularly like representative democracy.

(9,070 posts)...they would likely restrict minority, women, etc. from voting at all if they could. The power and decisions of the GOP are racists, male, and privileged.

(1,735 posts)Im sick of allowing them to find any comfort in their bigotry.

(9,302 posts)there were not Senators representing 66.7% of the population voting for impeachment.

(28,127 posts)Copied from Freddie's post:
Its baked in to all our institutions with seemingly no way out.
2/3 vote of the Senate needed for justice
2/3 vote of states for a Constitutional amendment
The filibuster
The Electoral College
The very nature of the senate which gives way outsized power to rural areas.
Gerrymandering
Voter suppression, which is now going to get a lot worse
Here again the MINORITY of the people are gloating they won and can continue inflicting this monster on the MAJORITY with apparently no consequences.

(4,440 posts)When we changed the Constitution to require direct election of US Senators.
Prior to the 17th Amendment, the states got to decide how their Senators were selected. The Federalist papers described Senators as senior legislators who would not be directly influenced by the voters of the state.
We were trying to fix something else when we passed the 17th amendment, and we screwed up.

(17,958 posts)The others are much heavier lifts. However, they are a very good blueprint for a multi election cycle, probably multi decade movement to point our government back towards fulfilling our creed and our national promise.

(6,601 posts)Representatives (in the House) vote to impeach, & Senators don't get to vote on it.
I really wish the "experts" would get the basic process correct.
