An Iowa woman pleaded guilty to multiple hate-crime-related offenses after being accused of hitting two children with her car because of their races more than a year ago.

The guilty plea came during a court appearance Wednesday by Nicole Poole Franklin, who is charged with violating the U.S Hate Crime Act, the Des Moines Register reported. Poole pleaded guilty to both counts she was charged with.

Poole is accused of striking a Black boy, 12, and Latina girl, 14, with her vehicle on Dec. 9, 2019 in Des Moines, authorities say.

On that same day, Poole also allegedly shouted slurs at a staff member at a gas station.

During Wednesday’s appearance, Poole claimed to believe that the boy she struck with her car was an Islamic State terrorist, according to the newspaper.

She previously claimed to have hit the 14-year-old girl because she is “a Mexican,” police said, according to the Des Moines Register.
