(PA) Voter ID law draws legal fire: NAACP, other groups taking it to court

Viviette Applewhite, 93, has voted in every presidential election since she cast a ballot for John F. Kennedy in 1960, but she won't be able to vote this year.

Applewhite, of Philadelphia, had her purse stolen several years ago. In it was her birth certificate.

She's never had a driver's license, and because she's been unable to get a replacement copy of her birth certificate, she doesn't have the government identification that will allow her to vote in November.

But Applewhite doesn't represent an unintended consequence of the state's new voter ID law — she represents just the kind of voters the backers of the law were trying to keep away from the polls, John Jordan asserted Monday evening ...
