An inmate who spent 22 years in solitary confinement in an Illinois prison after being arrested for stealing a hat and a dollar bill is campaigning for legislation to end a practice that he says drove him to self-mutilation and a suicide attempt.
Anthony Gay said he was tortured for decades by his isolation for up to 24 hours a day in a cold, tiny cell he likened to a dungeon, and was denied access to necessary mental health care.
His efforts since his 2018 release to outlaw the procedure as a punitive measure is reflected in a bill that bears his name now making its way through the Illinois legislature.
I know what its like to be tortured and I know that many people are still being tortured, he said in an interview with ABC News.

(33,643 posts)It's particularly disturbing that this is essentially extra-judicial punishment.
The implementation of 'solitary' is wildly fucked up in this country.
He is also MAD STRONG to have survived that torture

(12,471 posts)in solitary in a mental hospital.
I thought it was 9 months until I got my records and saw it was 18 months.
I still feel and suffer the effects of it years later.
I have PTSD related to that, among other things. My arms are covered in cutting scars.
I live alone now because too much stimulus will make me crazy now.
Solitary really is torture.
Nowadays they can't put a person in the 'quiet room' alone longer than 2 hours at a time..
I was in solitary at age 17 to 18.
Mental hospitals are barred from using solitary for days or months to 'control' people.
Solitary needs to be banned everywhere period.
18 months fucked me up.I cannot imagine what 22 years would have done to me.
