Witness in George Floyd trial gets vacation, and new friendship, from Seal Beach man
Richard Glassman was so moved when he saw Charles McMillian on the stand that he wanted to reach out. The two men, from different worlds, now have a story to share.
Charles McMillian, left, a witness to George Floyds death, and his son, Charlie McMillian, right, and Richard Glassman, center, in Seal Beach, CA, on Friday, May 7, 2021. When Seal Beach resident Richard Glassman saw Charles McMillian break down in tears during testimony he reached out. The two men befriended each other and Glassman, a retired peace officer, appreciated that McMillian spoke with respect about police officers. Glassman flew the McMillians to Southern California and is trying to help Charles raise money for his post-traumatic stress. (Photo by Jeff Gritchen, Orange County Register/SCNG)

As Seal Beach tourist Charles McMillian strolled down Main Street this month wearing his distinctive white-framed glasses a couple stopped to greet him.
Oh, they just wanted to thank me for my testimony, McMillian explained with a shrug as he took a seat outside Old Town Cafe.
A few months ago, the 61-year-old man was just another face in the crowd and, like many, struggling to get by.
Then, on March 31, millions around the globe saw his riveting eye-witness account of George Floyds horrific death. As McMillian puts it now, When I cried, the whole world cried.
That night, in his Seal Beach apartment, Richard Glassman was one of those people. Watching the evening news, McMillians tears moved him to tears, as well.

Very often, it is not such a positive story, though.
