Trump's latest ridiculous lawsuit shows how small he has become

For someone who filed thousands of lawsuits during his career in business, former president Donald Trump has been rather quiet on the legal front since he left office — particularly if you don’t count the criminal charges his business and associates are facing — with only a few minor suits filed here and there.

But that ended on Wednesday. Trump announced that he has filed suit against Facebook, Google, Twitter, and their CEOs, a class action that will at last seek justice for the people those companies have so grievously wronged, starting with Trump himself.

It sounds like something big: a former president, facing off against some of the biggest, most influential and most profitable tech companies in America. But, in fact, it’s puny and pathetic.

Perhaps because of his company’s struggles, Trump is returning to his roots as a small-time grifter, desperate to draw attention to himself and willing to do just about anything to grab a few extra bucks.

Twitter was his way of saying what he wanted without being questioned about it.

If he actually has to talk to the media, he's doomed.

Imagine... the 140 (or (280) character administration. 4 years of it. It's a wonder we survived.

(Of course--600,000 people didn't.)

And teleprompter. This is only the beginning of this type of coverage for this has been. Pretending to be president.
He doesn’t need social media he’s figuring out how to get his message out there. God help us.

It's a marketing campaign to gather chumps and suckers to his upcoming social media channel.

I agree with Steve Benen/ This is a fundraising stunt

Complicating matters just a bit more, there have been related cases along these lines, and they've all failed: private social-media companies are not arms of the government, judges have ruled, and they have the authority to regulate content. Similarly, Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which protects companies from such lawsuits, still exists, Trump's incessant whining about the provision notwithstanding.

So why bother? Why go through the motions with a misguided public-relations stunt, rooted entirely in dubious claims and conspiracy theories that don't make any sense?

There's no great mystery here: "Before Mr. Trump was done speaking, both the National Republican Congressional Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee had sent text messages about the lawsuit and asked for contributions. Mr. Trump's political action committee sent its own solicitation shortly after the event ended. 'Donate NOW,' it said."

I don't doubt that many will fall for this. Republican voters who've been conditioned to believe that Twitter and Facebook are big meanies toward conservatives will likely grab their credit cards to show their support for Trump and this pointless exercise.

But that doesn't mean this lawsuit has merit; it means the opposite

once he realizes that he will have to go through the discovery process, and probably stand for a deposition.

No way he does any of that.

He's just using this as one more scam to grift the rubes.
