"Afghanistan will become a human rights problem
In the provinces they've captured so far, there's strong evidence that the Taliban of today and the Taliban of 20 years ago are not much different. The Taliban of the past were infamous for denying education to women, carrying out public executions of their opponents, persecuting minorities, such as the Shiite Hazaras, and destroying priceless ancient giant stone Buddhas at Bamiyan....

A Taliban regime could again become a safe haven for extremists
Speaking on NPR's All Things Considered this week, former U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta offered this blunt assessment: "The Taliban are terrorists, and they're going to support terrorists."

A Taliban-ruled Afghanistan might destabilize Pakistan

...Haqqani, the former ambassador who is now director for South and Central Asia at the Hudson Institute, writes in Foreign Affairs that "Islamist extremism has already divided Pakistani society along sectarian lines, and the ascendance of Afghan Islamists next door will only embolden radicals at home."

China could gain a foothold in the region
...China has reportedly promised big investments in energy and infrastructure projects, including the building of a road network in Afghanistan and is also eyeing the country's vast, untapped, rare-earth mineral deposits. And Beijing is reportedly preparing to formally recognize the Taliban if the group seizes control of the country..."

While the USA should not be staying in Afghanistan indefinitely, the timing and actual consequences of pulling out now are problematic from the human rights perspective as well as international relations one.

Who cares to all their reasons. Maybe the pukes can go there and set up camp? I would go to fight them there.

2. The US trained 300,000 Afghan fighters...why aren't they fighting back...and one must surmise they don't care about the well being of the women anymore than the Taliban.

3. What makes anyone think China will gain a foothold any more than Russia or the US were able to.

problem. The global elite who have relied on local uprisings to swoop in and take over property rights once the resident population has been moved out of a region no longer rely on so called Western government intervention to help install friendly to investor leaders finance the disruptions themselves with money they made from the same governments who have used them to replace U.S. military and other agency people. Thanks to their global tax reduction push the multinational corporations and billionaire investors now finance their own hot spots to exploit.

Remember, Erik wanted to privatize the Afghanistan war.

One of Prince's companies has a contract with China for a "training facility," very near the bit of border China and Afghanistan share.

8. This was another Republican "nation building"disaster

The Afghan government was never recognized as authoritative by the people, and that's the problem. It was always seen as an American puppet government. No matter how much training the army got, it did not know for what it was fighting and dying.

Then Trump, in his propensity to side with the worst, decided that making friends with Taliban wouldn't be so bad. The orange headed buffoon is just an amoral pig driven by his hunger for money and saw Afghanistan as a potential investment opportunity. That pulled the rug out from what little trust had been placed in the government by the people. And as usual in these nation-building situations where Republicans want to push right-wing ideology, the corruption boggled the mind as a few Afghans pocketed much of the billions poured into the country. They flew out weeks ago, to Switzerland, mostly.

Liz Cheney's criticism of Biden should be good for a laugh, considering her father's influence is one of the reasons why things are the way they are now. Had the US done what should have been done, instead of messing around in Iraq and headed to Afghanistan originally, done what needed to be done with Al Quaida and got out, none of this would be happening. The biggest share of the blame belongs to Bush and the Republicans, then Trump and his enablers.

We need to learn not to do this anymore. People do not want a foreign power in their country, human rights or not. We can't keep doing this.
