Column: The math is simple -- California Republicans probably won't pull off Newsom recall

Politics is about math. And if you’re outnumbered 2 to 1, you invariably lose. That’s how Republicans started their recall fight and the way they’re ending it — apparent losers again.

Voting won’t be over until Sept. 14. We could be surprised. The polls may be wrong and the initial pace of ballot returns perhaps is misleading.

But the signs point so far to a wasteful GOP misadventure and political survival for Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom.

A new poll last week by the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California found that 58% of likely voters oppose recalling Newsom. Only 39% want to oust him.

Probably just another Donald Trump style grift.

No excuse why the rules were not tightened after the last recall. Sorry but that is true.

as they have no chance in a general election in deep blue California. They'll keep trying until that law is changed. Right now only 12 percent of the electorate's signatures are needed to recall, whereas in other states it's 25 percent.

After this is over the Democratic legislators have to get to work on changing that law and stop putting it off.

Republicans are super pumped on this recall. They’re very organized in every red district, and working hard in even the bluest ones. We see street corner demonstrations, signs hung on freeway overpasses, yard signs and people going door to door for the recall. Barely any Dems anywhere doing the same.

Remember that people said they’d never get enough signatures, then they blew way, way past that.

The polls have been off, and reporting about the polls has been off in each of the last key elections. These “don’t worry, we’ve got this” posts are whistling past the graveyard until the last results are counted.

If you’re in California, return your ballot! Get your friends and neighbors to do the same! It’s really, really important

Trump's people consistently beat the polling numbers 2 to 5 points. This is gonna be close.

Everyone needs to get out there and vote
