Gerrymandering in Ohio, Summer 2021 Version +The GOP

(For any one who thought DeWine was a noble moderate acting governor by his actions in the early days of the pandemic- WE TOLD YOU HE WASN'T)

https://ohiocapitaljournal.com/2021/09/23/ohio-gop-leaders-broke-promises-failed-us-all/

title--Ohio GOP leaders broke promises, failed us all by creating more rigged maps
DAVID DEWITT
SEPTEMBER 23, 2021 12:45 AM

snip--The oddest part is Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine acting as though he’s somehow powerless and had no choice when he voted to rig Ohio elections with partisan, gerrymandered maps for the next four years. After all, he’s only the governor.

It’s an absurd position. Maps were proposed to the commission that actually represent the 54-46 Republican to Democratic political split of Ohioans, as averaged over 16 partisan statewide elections, directly mirroring the 1.9 million to 1.6 million Republican to Democratic registered voter split of Ohioans. The majority of registered voters, 4.5 million, are unaffiliated.

GOP leaders instead awarded themselves more supermajorities, with a House breakdown of 62 seats to 37 Dems, and 23 to 10 in the Senate, according to their own figures. Dave’s Redistricting App projects a 65-seat GOP supermajority in the House. This is called cheating.

As one of the seven members on the 5-2 Republican to Democratic Ohio Redistricting Commission, DeWine had a vote. As did fellow Republicans Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, Ohio Auditor Keith Faber, Senate President Matt Huffman, and House Speaker Bob Cupp, and two Democrats, their House Leader Emilia Sykes and state Sen. Vernon Sykes."

Geographical informational software (GIS) and the access to social media data as well as other sources of demographic data allow anyone to draw a highly accurate picture of where your base voters, swing voters, and opposition voters are located. It has turned gerrymandering into a science, as opposed to educated guessing based on personal experience and past voting patterns.

I have relished voting against DeWine and his misogynistic RW codswallop every time.

In very early March 2020, DeWine took Dr Acton & other public health officials other health experts advice canceled the just days away " The Arnold" body building event. I still see that a moment where my opinion of him took an uptick to modest loathing. His other attempts to limit Womens legal health choices in Ohio by a backdoor attempt to stop clinics from doing their legal jobs as a result of pandemic shutdowns returned me to active loathing and disdain.

Back in the day...I took Ohio history in Jr High . One of the things that we learned that the commission to redistrict was specifically built with equal members of each party to maintain fairness.

We were taught about gerrymandering and even the 'fair play' gerrymandering that occurred. The dems would get to gerrymander one seat to protect someone whose district had changed and the republicans would do the same. Then the rest of the districts would be drawn up in a reasonable way so you didn't have a bunch of Gym Jordan starfish shaped districts.

Oh for the simple days...when they just tried to beat us with stupid one issue voters and lies and not blatant cheating sanctioned by a stolen supree court.

The SC said -- you need to prove gerrymandering -- so we came up with a math proof -- then they claimed it was not sufficient....because it showed that the Rethigs who made them justices cheated.

Not hard to know that if the population is split nearly evenly in total otes that no group should get a supermajority if you didn't cheat

I grew up in 'That State Up North,' I remember Mr Haddad explaining that Ohio was a political spoils state, the party who held the Governors seat could and did have their friends buy the ability to run license bureaus. Seems like that ethos still holds true here

Now... Governor Rhodes did love to get his name on every construction project and minor appointments may have been the spoils system.

I remember the lesson well. We had a 20x20 grid with R or D in each box. We were supposed to draw to group the boxes in groups of 20 three different ways

1. Try to maximize the number of regions with 11 or more D
2. Try to maximize the number of regions with 11 or more R
3. Try to draw it 'fairly' which we were able to decide for ourselves and then justify. (most people went with some sort of repeating rectangular pattern to be fair).

Interestingly, the tecaher had set it up so that whether you did 4 wide by down or 5 wide by 4 down for the 'fair' one way gave an advantage to one party over the other....it was a good lesson in that what appears to be 'fair' at first might not be.
