Politically bankrupt: Senate Republicans are happy for the US to default on its debt

Journey with us, if you will, all the way back to August 2019. In a budget deal passed by Congress and signed by President Donald Trump, Washington suspended the U.S. debt limit for two years — two years in which Republicans refrained from pitching a fit every time the U.S. needed to borrow more money.

And borrow we did, under an administration and Congress that slashed taxes by trillions while dramatically increasing federal spending, even before the COVID crisis hit. With aid of three separate increases to the debt ceiling, the federal debt soared by nearly $7.8 trillion during Trump’s four-year tenure — the third biggest increase relative to the size of the economy of any presidency in history (after Lincoln, who fought a civil war, and George W. Bush, who launched two foreign wars).

It is therefore the purest form of chutzpah for Sen. Mitch McConnell and other Republicans who facilitated Trump’s reckless record to now lay down in the middle of the tracks and refuse to raise the government’s debt limit as a fiscal freight train barrels toward us, toying with America’s full faith and credit.

“We will not support legislation that raises the debt limit,” quoth the Republican Senate leader, who hails from a state that benefits hugely from federal largesse. He and his fellow partisans have the gall to claim it is the social spending of Joe Biden and other Democrats that fueled the red-ink rise. In fact, 97% of the nation’s current debt was accrued before Biden took office.

Let that sink in for a second and then wonder (as I do) why EVERY single ad and TV appearance by a Democratic Party candidate does not include this information?

In the 21st century, we have had 2 Republican administrations. They ran up the debt and later pretended to care about it.
Do you want to continue being lied to? If you do, vote for a Republican...if not, there is a better choice.

the debt/spending bill they will be responsible for no Social Security payments, no payments to active military, just for starters.

The House just passed the combined bills. If I were Manchin and Sinema I would think twice before voting against this bill, put it all on Republicans.

I would make Republicans actually get up and filibuster the bill. Let them explain why there will be no SS checks in the mail or wages for our active military. Time to get tough Senator Schumer.

Having a debate with a conservative friend (not a thumper, just an old fashioned conservative, a dying breed). I was trying to find a source showing debt with and without the Covid relief bills.

r's are using every means to destroy this country and hand it over to putin. Covid-19, lies about the voting system, now throwing the American reputation as a relaible debtor in the trash heap.

Every single r holding elected office should be arrested for treason. And made to prove they aren't enemies of the state.

In Trump's first year in office, I posted that his apparent goal was to "join the international club of vicious dictators". I have not changed my opinion on that one, and I have the impression there is more and more evidence supporting that.

Now this: When Obama was elected, the Republicans led my Moscow Mitch apparently decided that they no longer liked democracy. Republicans have been doing everything possible to convince the nation and the world that democracy does not work. I suggest they are not just blocking democrats' agenda and efforts to make government work for everyone, they are trying to make democratic government fail.

could find a better term than "raise the debt limit", and start calling it more akin to what it is.....
paying our bills on time with no late fees. We don't vote to make house/car payments, we just do it.
Can't see why congress couldn't tweak their rules a little.
