1. The "American Gentry" are also amongst the most corrupt in my experience.

Because they are not in the big cities, they don't get the scrutiny that large cities get. Therefore, they regularly corrupt the local government, and any local media, if it exists, is either in their pocket or knows better than to "rock the boat".
