McConnell has given Democrats the justification they need to kill the filibuster
News flash: The Grand Old Party, also known as the Deadbeat Republican Party, is unwilling to pay the bills and ready to turn off the lights in America. No principles here; this is all about politics no matter the consequences of this deliberately inflicted economic crisis with a global pandemic and multiple natural disasters as a backdrop.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) pronounced that no Republican would cast a vote to increase the debt ceiling. That moved the goal post, because hes effectively threatening a filibuster if 10 Senate Republicans do not join Democrats to advance the measure. With classic McConnell cynicism, he declared that the government must pay its bills while announcing that Republicans wont sign the checks. That was the reveal. Not to be outdone, every single House Republican voted against both increasing the debt limit and keeping the government running when funding runs out on Oct. 1.
Just as Republicans have fallen in line with the big lie about the 2020 election, undermining confidence in our democracy and its constitutional norms, they are now prepared to set fire to the entire house by tanking our economy. But this despicable move can give Democrats exactly the ammunition they need a genuine, defensible justification for eliminating the filibuster.
Democrats should call McConnells bluff. Kill the filibuster, raise the debt ceiling to pay our bills, fund the U.S. government. And then be free to move on and pass the broader agenda that the majority of voters want.

What say you, Schumer?

(10,045 posts)to kill the filibuster, not sure what his objective is. He either wants the dems to kill the filibuster or he wants to prove to them he has Sinema and Manchin in his back pocket which gives him the ability to do whatever the hell he wants.

I really fear that the GOP is going to get away with rigging the system and turn the whole government into a permanent totalitarian conservative regime. Those two senators don't seem to care.

(1,910 posts)Don't see how there is any choice unless McConnell is bluffing to see if he can get some concessions. If the default happens the Dems will lose the House and Senate in a year. Not sure how that helps Manchin and Sinema.

This rule they are calling a filibuster is really very different from the original rule which required the person declaring a filibuster to actually put time, effort, and physical endurance into his objection by continually addressing the Senate. This current procedure cannot even be called a pale imitation.

(455 posts)Because trying to violate the 14th Amendment certainly violates a Senator's oath of office. I wonder if there is any way to apply a criminal sanction based on failure to perform a sworn duty.

(4,588 posts)Republicans took that vote in a cynical, FU move which is based neither on policy or reason. But it seems that Democrats just cant ever be pushed into doing what needs to be done. Its pretty discouraging. Instead of taking action, theyre just going to let the government shut down. And later default too? All because of a baseless respect for a flawed and inappropriately used rule.

But I think we all know by now they don't have the stomach for it.

(402 posts)To the Dems who refuse to get rid of the filibuster because they think they may need it sometime in the future.... I've got news for you. If you don't end it now and pass the legislation that we all want you to pass, you won't get a chance ever again to use it when the Republicans take back the Senate. Mark my word, Mitch McConnell will eliminate the filibuster the minute he becomes Majority Leader again, if not because he wants to, then because it will make the Dems heads explode.
