If abortion a religious issue what's it mean for law?

By Sid Schwab / Herald columnist

Overtly or co-, every one of the conservatives currently on the U.S. Supreme Court lied during their confirmation hearings. They knew it, senators knew it, those of us watching knew it. With big-money backing and, in the cases of Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett, by way of cosmic hypocrisy on the part of Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., each was specifically selected to end legal abortion. Which, by all accounts, is about to happen.

So let’s talk about it. I can take it if you can.

First, some mostly non-controversial statements: 1. Polls show only 20 percent of Americans believe abortion should be banned under all circumstances, which is fewer than those who think it should be completely unrestricted; and far less than those who think it should be legal until some gestational point.

2. Establishing a universally agreed-upon point is impossible.

3. Where birth control and realistic sex education are available, abortions are much less common than where they aren’t.

Will they go to hell because their government allows it?

Their tax dollars do not fund abortions.
Their tax dollars DO fund fighting abortions.

If abortion goes against religion then teach your children how to avoid it. Sex education would help instead of telling your children to stay pure until marriage. We are still biological beings driven by hormones. Just say no rarely works.

Teach your sons respect for other human beings.

Add to my list if you want to.

So if a state adopts legislation that bans all abortions, is it then in violation of the First Amendment's establishment clause? That's a fine legal hair to split since state governments could come to that conclusion without religious influence. But that's not very likely.

But the rights of individuals who believe life begins at conception are not violated by laws which permit a woman to choose an abortion. There's no personal accountability required of someone just because they live in a country that allows it. And if your religious beliefs about abortion are genuine and sincere, then it seems you'd be looking for ways to help women facing that kind of a choice to make what you think is the right choice, rather than allowing circumstances to be the deciding factor. Right? If you feel strongly that every child has the right to be born, then you'd be in favor of counseling services, health services, job and financial assistance, and providing places for babies to be adopted if the mothers don't have the ability to keep the babies. Or you'd at least let the state fund the programs with taxpayer dollars.
