Liz Cheney points to crime Trump, others might face

By Aaron Blake / The Washington Post

Rep. Liz Cheney’s disclosures of intriguing Jan. 6 text messages between Mark Meadows and both Donald Trump Jr. and Fox News personalities are the big news in the committee’s investigation right now. But don’t lose sight of what Cheney, R-Wyo., said immediately after she read those texts aloud.

In summing up the texts, Cheney said, “Mr. Meadows’s testimony will bear on another key question before this committee: Did Donald Trump, through action or inaction, corruptly seek to obstruct or impede Congress’s official proceeding to count electoral votes?”

A casual observer might have missed it, but what Cheney was doing here was pointing to a specific criminal statute — a felony, 18 U.S. Code § 1512 — that she suggests President Trump might have violated. And both its inclusion in her comments and the timing of it shouldn’t be lost on anyone. This was a Republican member of the committee floating a specific potential Trump crime that the committee apparently wants to drill down on; it also came shortly after a federal judge upheld the use of the statute in a key Jan. 6 case.

Cheney, on Tuesday morning at another hearing, cited the statute again; pretty much erasing any doubt about how deliberate this was.

twist it. And that is what's she is doing I wouldn't be surprised if her presence has given the committee the fortitude to be more way more agressive than the Dems would have been without her.

Meadows and Bannon et Al are pursued by a torcherers daughter, not writers of sternly worded letters from handwringers

Why is she doing this now? The wondering is not about her motivation or anything nefarious. I wonder whether she knows or strongly suspects that something is coming down the pike sooner rather than later. She may be on the outs with the party but with her father having been spreading his tentacles for more than half a century, she is the ultimate and possibly best-connected insider in Washington.

her message was directed at Merrick Garland. The select committee has done a lot of leg work, has a lot of documents and testimony, Liz Cheney was telling Merrick Garland, it's time for DOJ to step up to the plate. Without DOJ getting involved the 1/6 insurrection was practice.

The word "bipartisanship" has been a bad joke for a very long time, but that's what that committee embodies.

Convicted of anything, even treason or murdering people on tape, the very first President that steals an election for GQP, he will be Pardoned and free to roam. Justice will never be fully served on this pig. God taking him home, (being he directly sent him) will be the only way we rid ourselves of him. But his spawn and Fox will remain.

I hope Baron, Melonoma and all his spawn have to change their name. Jr is in the worst situation, and that makes me feel warm all over. Ya think he would use one of Sr’s many aliases from his days calling in to shows. Hope his brand is a tarnished as Hitler, but there will be a cult for him as there is still for Hitler. You can bet a few of his most loyal ass fleas will have trump tramp stamps tattooed on their asses like his buddy, the Penguin.

reminds me of how the media mostly ignored it when Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the House, called the Senate Minority Leader, "Moscow Mitch."
