by a friend: 'We cannot enforce a no-fly zone over Ukraine.
If we end up shooting down a Russian plane =WWIII. It also gives Putin what he desperately needs right now: a way to unify Russians against an external enemy.
We cannot enter this war. I say this as a Ukrainian, the US cannot engage militarily. The world is united around Ukraine right now. America has meddled enough.'

(12,563 posts)Obviously he's getting "meddling" confused with "leading."
Or was Churchill meddling in Germany's disagreement with the rest of Europe?

our planes start taking Russian anti-aircraft fire and need to fire back to protect themselves.
We need to take out the anti-aircraft batteries that could actually be based in Russia.
And much of the destruction of Ukraine is coming from land-based missile launchers. Do our planes start taking them out too?
Still Putrid must be countered. Many more are going to die.

(7,189 posts)Why shouldnt Putin be equally afraid of that, too?
Not that kind of 'bear'

(35,270 posts)We could.
Arguably, we "mustn't" enforce a no-fly zone, and perhaps we "shouldn't" enforce a no-fly zone.
But we probably *could* actually enforce one, if push came t shove.
Stingers nice. But perhaps some AA weapons that have a rather higher reach could "accidently" be shipped to Ukraine.

(130,714 posts)Just read, 'Putin has said the sanctions are a declaration of war,' so words don't matter, OUR words, anyway.
'he wants to go to war with the west. He is itching for at least asymmetrical warfare.'

"Vseia Rusi" is a big deal to him, from what he's said when talking to svoi.
Wanting Voronezh, Tula, Piter, and Moscow bombed? Even in his Soviet-added brain there must lurk a bit of a realization that millions dead isn't worth his honor.
What he'd do with that is a bit of a mystery.
I still think that 90 minutes after Russian "peacekeepers" moved to the Donbas LOC NATO peacekeepers should have likewise moved to the Donbas LOC. In equal numbers. With a rather large number of troops in Poland and Romania, ready to go in and "defend" the peacekeepers.
