Hate for Putin's Russia Consumes Ukraine
(snip)
It is a deep, seething bitterness for President Vladimir V. Putin, his military and his government. But Ukrainians are not giving a pass to ordinary Russians, either, calling them complicit through years of political passivity. The hatred is vented by mothers in bomb shelters, by volunteers preparing to fight on the front lines, by intellectuals and by artists.
The emotion is so powerful it could not be assuaged even by an Orthodox religious holiday on Sunday intended to foster forgiveness before Lent. Called Forgiveness Sunday, the holiday is recognized in both the Russian and Ukrainian Orthodox churches.
And this hatred has overwhelmed the close personal ties between two Slavic nations, where many people have family living in both countries.

Many Ukrainians chastise Russians for increasingly accepting middle-class comforts afforded by the countrys oil wealth in exchange for declining to resist limits on their freedoms. They blame millions of Russians, who Ukrainians say gave up on the post-Soviet dreams of freedom and openness to the West, for enabling the war.

(6,137 posts)that includes the current war. Remember, his support has increased substantially after he annexed Crimea. Until recently, independent news and internet were freely available to all russians. There was no great firewall. This is no different than magats, should we just forgive all magats too? Russians simply choose to believe that putin is bringing peace, they are not interested in facts. Yes, there is sizable minority, maybe up to 30%, that doesnt support putin. It is very important that all russians feel pain from the sanctions, it is the only way for them to rebel against the regime that cost them jobs, livelihood, and future.
We need to focus on saving lives not livelihood. Poverty doesnt even close to the horrors of being shelled in Ukraine.

"Doctor, I have a Napoleon complex."
"What makes you say that?"
"I really want to burn Moscow."

"And how Ukrainians kill Russhits."
That said, I've known many Russians who were aghast and deeply embarrassed of Putain and his treatment of "brother nations." (Any brother who did that to a younger brother would be facing serious time; and if a brother did that to a sister ... More serious time and maybe with decades of therapy the sister *might* be reasonably okay."
I'm afraid in his (self-)righteous ideological mindset Putin's gonna wanna Grozny parts of the heretical, unfaithful, betrayer Ukraine.
