Stop Waiting for Trump to Get Convicted (The Atlantic)

As much as I want to throw this opinion piece on the trash heap, too much of it makes sense. I just hope it's not the way things end up.

The Atlantic/Paul Rosenzweig

Attorney General Merrick Garland is not going to save democracy. Nor is the attorney general of New York, Letitia James; the Manhattan district attorney, Alvin Bragg; nor the Fulton County district attorney, Fani Willis. As the apparent collapse of the New York district attorney’s investigation makes clear, criminal cases are hard to make. Donald Trump, despite his many seemingly criminal acts, is unlikely to ever spend a day in jail.

Observers of the Trump malignancy have an unfortunate habit of wish casting—believing that their most optimistic fantasies will become reality. They did this with the Mueller investigation—remember “It’s Mueller Time”?—and they did it with both of Trump’s impeachments. Their dream has always been that somehow, somewhere, someone would call Trump to account for his actions and, in doing so, save American democracy.

Today, many invest the ongoing criminal investigations of Trump in New York, Georgia, and Washington, D.C., with the same hopes. Even my good friend George Conway has speculated that this time things might be different.

I don’t see it happening. Please don’t misunderstand; I am as convinced as anyone of the criminality of Trump’s conduct, and nothing would please me more than to see him get his deserved comeuppance. He should, and very well may, be indicted in one or more of these jurisdictions. And the civil suits against him may have legs.

being bled dry financially if the fat criminal never spends a day in jail. Let him have to continue to spend big bucks for lawyers and suits to delay and halt legal proceedings against him (and of course he's making payoffs).

All of that is constantly over his increasingly incoherent head. That can't be pleasant. He'll have it for life, and there's not much left of that.

Talk about letting the air out of all sails! (sigh) All this proves to me is that there actually is two sets of laws for the people of the United States: One for the rich and powerful, and one for the rest of us.

The 99% of us can be assured of police mishandling and abuse, crooked charges, and jail, post haste.

The rich and powerful are assured of doing any crime, no matter how awful, and get away with it, while being treated with kid gloves.

In short, our "Justice system" is completely broke. It either applies to everyone, or it applies to no one. We do need a revolution in this country, but it ain't the Magat rebellion we need. We need people who are committed to the principles of the Constitution as the living document the Founders meant it to be. Not some old, dried out piece of paper that stated words and left out meaning (since the meaning was meant to be interpreted in light of the current society). They treat the Constitution like they treat the Bible... set in stone, inviolate, and non-interpretable. Literal reading is wrong and disrespects critical thinking. But when do the R's ever want critical thinking?

Meanwhile, I'd love to go out and break a whole lot of laws and scream to high heavens once the police get me about the injustice of it while T and his cronies crime all over the place with no one bothering them at all. Ah... if only I was 40 years younger...

just how corrupt, unpatriotic and unamerican this guy is.

The insurrection charges will go to a court in DC and I'll point out that while there are some Trumpies in the district, there are not "hundreds of thousands" as the writer of the article states. Biden/Harris got 318,000 votes in DC, Trump just a little over 18,000.

A lot of what happens will depend on who the judge is. If criminals like Trump can't be prosecuted in this system because of politics, then we have become the kind of nation George Washington warned us about in his farewell address.

He should already be in jail, should have been months ago at least. It hasn’t happened. My sense: it’s not going to.

As for bankrupting him (in response to other posts, not yours), he’s milking every legal challenge for millions from his enablers, supporters, contributors and allies (foreign and domestic) and will continue to do so gladly and with glee.

trump is too wealthy and too white to take a fall. What passes for a justice system in this country just isn't equal to the task. I'd love to be proven wrong on this, but I don't see that happening. Not anymore.

Barr, (as an example) cover for him. The GOP won't stand so resilient forever. Even if the system is corrupt as this article is saying without outright saying it. I believe there will be a day when Trump will be held accountable. He has to be. other wise we have just entered the age of the Don.
