The bodies of Russian soldiers are piling up in Ukraine, as Kremlin conceals true toll of war

Lviv, Ukraine (CNN) — The first warm, sunny days of spring in the southern Mykolaiv region are ushering in a grim new reality: the smell of the dead.

As the frost melts and ground thaws, the bodies of Russian soldiers strewn across the landscape are becoming a problem.

In his nightly video address on Saturday, Vitaly Kim, the region's governor, called on local residents to help collect the corpses and put them in bags, as temperatures rise to above freezing. "We're not beasts, are we?" he implored residents, who have already lost so many of their own in this war.

(snip)

Referring to them as "orcs"— the evil, monstrous army in J. R. R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" — Kim said that the Russians had retreated and left their colleagues' charred bodies behind on the battlefield. He sent CNN pictures of the abandoned corpses, adding: "There are hundreds of them, all over the region."

Remember that most of these troops have been propagandized their whole lives, and that Many were not even told they were going to war. These are not the sons of the Oligarchs.

This is a horrible situation.

Perhaps burying them in place, or en masse close to the place of their demise would be a better choice. Place a small marker with all names, and send their dog tags back to their parents.

Their parents would likely want to visit the final resting place of their child. I doubt they do/will support this criminal war and may become allies.

However, I am OK with sending the dog tags home. They won't biodegrade anyway.

With no good solutions - aside from those in pUtins inner circle finally deciding to put down the rabid dog.

There should be sunflower seeds planted on the graves.

Without identifying where found. That would be a reminder not to go to war. Harsh but necessary.

I seriously doubt many Russians would want to visit where their loved ones were needlessly killed.

Russians may end up finding out about their dead soldiers by searching the Internet, because their gov't won't ever acknowledge their losses.

that would allow an army to just leave their dead to rot or become carrion in the streets. This is disgraceful disrespect of those men who served.

I'm retired NAVY and no American soldier, sailor, airman or marine would ever tolerate our fallen be left behind in that manner. Let alone by the thousands.

I believe it began with Putin waging an unprovoked war based so much on lies that many of his own troops didn't even know they were going into battle, particularly the ones coming in from Belarus.

They simply weren't properly equipped with enough fuel and supplies so as the leader that sent them there to die, how do you handle that kind of guilt?

Putin has been living in a self-imposed information bubble for years so I imagine it's just as easy for him to forget about or compartmentalize the death of an average Russian solider as it is the murder of a pregnant Ukrainian mother bombed or shelled by his aircraft and artillery.

I believe Putin has lost connection to his humanity, whether he can get it back or not is a preeminent question.

As KGB spy, his understanding of military culture is non-existent.

I'm not sure he ever had a connection to humanity, but his military should take note of how he feels about them once they had done his bidding.

Who served in the first MarDiv into Chosin Reservoir (1950), there is no such thing as a "former Marine," Uncle Joe. Once a Marine, ALWAYS a Marine. And I have two brothers and a sister who went into the Corps. You can imagine the razing I took over going into the NAVY.
