Republicans are backing Ukraine. So why is there support for Russia on America's far right?

Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, there has been near unanimous denunciation of President Vladimir Putin, from President Joe Biden calling Putin a "war criminal," to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell describing him as a "ruthless thug."

But the Ukraine invasion has found a significant pocket of support from prominent figures on the far right including white supremacist Nick Fuentes, who regularly gushes about Putin on his Telegram channel. The war is also a hot topic in QAnon chatrooms where Putin is often portrayed as a hero.

-snip-

America's far right shares a common enemy with Putin and Russia: the West's liberal values and the cabal of elites they say controls the economy and the media.

“It helped for Russian purposes to act like all of these other people agree with them,” Weiss said. “It was a way of creating an echo chamber where there isn’t one.”

They have infiltrated out nation at the highest levels, and have both unwitting supporters and paid shills doing their work for them. I recall spending a lot of time pointing out RT crap, being parroted by left wingers, in the 2016 elections. They have gone after the most extreme on all ends of the spectrum, and then found their footing in the mainstream, due to the damage the GQP has done to our nation's education system over the last 40 years.

HRC was absolutely correct when she talked about the vast right wing conspiracy, and it has accelerated over the last 10 years. "Liberal values", etc. provide simple talking points and targets, for the stupids, when the right only cares about taking absolute authoritarian power.

Combination of ignorance, suspicion of "elites" and media, and religious nuttery in which you engage in magical thinking, undeterred by facts and evidence.

He's religious and he hates gay people and "wokeness." The fact that he invaded another country and is slaughtering civilians doesn't matter as long as he's on the same page wrt social issues.

I still talk with one of my brothers who is a Trumper. I think it's the cult-think. They worship Trump as a god. Since Donny loves Vlad, they do too.

It's a combination of
Putin and Trump were buddies so supporting Putin means supporting Trump
Just automatically being contrarian - if Biden is on one side, they must be on the other
General swooning over dictatorial-style leaders (also explains Trump)
Putin's anti-gay stances and entanglement and support in Russia's state-run/backed churches
Q-Anon beliefs that Putin (along with Trump) is fighting against globalism, child sex rings, etc. and thus is doing the work of God
