President Biden on Monday stood by his comments over the weekend that Russia's Vladimir Putin "cannot remain in power" as Ukraine President Zelensky said he was open to discussing neutrality for his nation in exchange for a ceasefire. Special correspondent Ryan Chilcote talked with President Vladimir Putin's chief spokesman and deputy chief of staff Dmitry Peskov to get a view inside the Kremlin.

(246 posts)I don't think it is fair to say that it isn't worth it to the Russian people to find out the truth.
Many Russian people have protested at great risk to themselves. Apparently 15,000 have been arrested for protesting.
We have no idea what the remaining silent majority want with regards to hearing the truth. I can't say with definitive authority, but based on what I've read, it seems there are many people who are too scared to speak out.
There are also many people who have had no access to accurate news for decades. Does that mean they don't prefer learning the truth? It hasn't been an option for most Russians!
Does "not worth it" mean they are not willing to be dragged off by the police for uttering a word a suspicion about the party line? That fear seems fairly justified and I think many Americans would be cowed into staying silent under similar circumstances.
On what basis do you make your assumption?
I'm just saying that to me, it seems cynical and unfair to dismiss the Russia people at large in the way you have.

(246 posts)OK then. I get where you're coming from. Just to be sure and because the written word does not allow for immediate clarification - I do not mean that sarcastically.
I'm just always on alert about identifying one type of people or nation with a broad stroke. Makes it too easy to "otherize" people so I make it a point to remind us all that we are all ultimately one world and one people who are far more similar than different. My ancestors fled from and died in the holocaust so it has always been an important point for me. Anyway, the point is, I hear ya and agree.

(7,733 posts)When pressed on ICC, he said Russia doesnt recognize the ICC.
When confronted with civilian targeting, he boldfaced lied.
When confronted with the reality Russia has caused NATO to be even more closer than before, Peskov said basically NATO was moving closer anyway. What he chose to ignore is now NATO has achieved a powerful legitimacy that could only be dreamed of before the war.
