Republicans begin to abandon debates, just as they've abandoned moderates (and common sense)
There was a time, not long ago, when I would have argued that much of what ails our politics could be made better by forcing candidates into a lot more debates.
But that was before a new era of Fox News Republicans, soon led by the creeptacular Donald Trump, proved that there are not actually any penalties for standing up on a debate stage and sucking horrifically.
Whether our faith in debates as a democratic tool was misplaced or not, however, Republican candidates are still deciding that they don't want anything to do with them.
In a story on new Republican debate reluctance, Politico names some pretty obvious candidates.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott looks like he'll be ducking debates with Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke, and why the hell wouldn't he?
Georgia Republican Senate candidate Herschel Walker has been dodging debates, and given Walker's current campaigning there's no mystery there, either.
And then there's "Doctor" Mehmet Oz, the man famous for monetizing the promotion of dodgy cures so much so that he got himself hauled in front of a Senate health committee to explain himself, and it didn't go very well.
There is a real threat of Oz's campaign going down in humiliating flames if he goes up against any opponent willing to pop a videotape of Oz's Senate grilling into a VCR and invite a statewide television audience to have a watch.

Debate deadbeat? Texas Governor Greg Abbott, and presumptive Democratic nominee Beto O'Rourke.
Abbott is one of a growing number of Republicans running for major office or re-election this year, who have threatened to duck upcoming debates.

(15,325 posts)When you carry the attitude that you're so far above the laws & morals of a Democracy that the voters have no right to an answer to their questions, then you're an authoritarian.
Basically, ducking debates is telling voters to piss off.
Meanwhile, Beto O'Rourke literally talks to everyone he meets & answers anybody's questions. Honest & open as can be.

They are designed only to elicit soundbites for the next round of ads or posts on Facebook.
The questions from the hand-picked media are as scream-worthingly meaningless as they are mind-numbing.
And after more than a year of state campaigns, caucuses and elections followed by national conventions, who the hell DOESNT know who they will be voting for by the 3rd week in August of the election year???
The Access Hollywood tape came after the debates.
It should have turned the election to Hillary Clinton right there.
It didnt.
Evangelicals voted for a vile, porn-star fucking tax cheat anyway.
No one remembers the debate issues - because there werent any.

(21,642 posts)While we will have to put up with them though, all invited candidates should appear.
If only for the soundbites (and in Cheeto's case, the grunts and other sounds).

(22,144 posts)no management skills worth repeating, other than beating down the oppressed and those citizens in need (and instead mocks them, makes fun of them, etc.), and they're expert liars, so why even get them into a debate? They're scared of the truth, they're scared of being caught like a deer in headlights should they reveal an unpleasant truth (hmmm, orgies and coke, too, eh, Mr. Abbott?).
The word 'government' and republican are like oil and water. They don't mix.
