Rush Limbaugh's Sad, Forgotten Legacy Shows The Future To Peddlers of Hate

- Daily Kos, April 10, 2022. -Ed.

I was reading an acclaimed list of progressive and liberal thinkers; and was struck by how many times I’ve come across their quotes in my feed. There were people like Paul Krugman, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Jon Stewart. I looked out other lists, and came across others I know and admire. (Kos was in the top 10 in this Forbes list for building this site, which is more relevant than ever decades later.)

Going through the liberals, all are still talked about and highly regarded. For curiosity's sake, I looked up a list of conservative thinkers. I got people like George Will, William Buckley Jr., and Ayn Rand. I had to agree they made a lasting impact. I then moved on to other avenues of interest. Yet later that day I came across a tweet commemorating the one-year anniversary of Rush Limbaugh’s death. - Rush Limbaugh left nothing behind. No one quotes him, no one references him, his vast fortune didn't go to support any of the causes he supposedly believed in. The various Fox News talking heads should remember this. They will leave nothing when they are gone. -

Wow, that hit me.

I thought, wait a minute, Rush Limbaugh was highly paid and tremendously overhyped while he was still alive. I suddenly noticed that none of my right-wing friends were quoting him—and actually rarely did even when he was alive. Limbaugh never said anything profound or meaningful—just racist. In fact, it was liberals who quoted him to showcase the true beliefs of the conservative movement. Most of his quotes were things like his “jokes” about Aids victims, degrading comments about women’s appearances, calling a student who disagreed with him a “slut” to his audience, or telling a black man to “take the bone out of his nose.” In the end, Rush was just another disgusting bigot.

If you google his name, you will notice that all of the stories about him stop right immediately after his death. He was lionized for about a week, and then the world moved on. Rush grifted and led a decadent life of luxury, yet his legacy is simply one of hate-mongering against the most vulnerable populations among us. He left absolutely nothing for his supposed followers to latch on to. The fact is, Rush wasn’t needed even amongst them, because there were always plenty of white nationalist pundits and right-wing propagandists they could go to, and they did.

After all, these pundits just say the same things: they repeat the same talking points and make fun of others not like them. That’s easy to do & they are all replaceable. The sad reality for them is that they too will all be forgotten as well...

- None of them will be remembered.

1. I find it ironic that there have been no tell-all books about him and his ( "skeletons" )....

While he was alive he was obviously well protected by his dittoheads, but I thought there would be one or more after he died. But afaik, none. I honestly think the interest in him was gone. Thus the fate of "blow hearts"-- in this case a beached whale would have gotten more notice.

his name still comes up in articles such as this... would be better if his name was never uttered or written again

in the back building of my company. His radio was on softly, as it usually was, and I heard someone speaking in the same high pitch. I asked if they were playing old shows, he said no. I assumed the radio station had put on a sound-alike, someone speaking at the same pitch and timbre, because ditto heads were used to hearing someone speak at that pitch and maybe it would keep them listening.

passing this info. onto someone (a Dem.) who occasionally listen to this creep. It also reminded me of the ugly comments he made about the Clintons' daughter.

11. In fact, a religious network hired talker Al Kresta because he sounded so much like Limbaugh.

"Ave Maria Radio", funded by the execrable Tom Monaghan (founder of Domino's Pizza), wanted a Limbaugh clone for their insane radtrad "Catholic" network. Kresta fit the bill, with a voice that sounded almost exactly like Limbaugh. The "Al Kresta Show", among many other unimaginative titles over the years--e.g. "Kresta in the Morning", "Kresta in the Afternoon"--is just as reactionary and mean-spirited as Limbaugh ever was, often featuring guests pushing vanity-press books or representing far-right "think" tanks.

I blame Rush Limbaugh and the whole genre of right wing media (it's not news and I won't call it that) that has sprung up in his wake for using hatred and people's biases and prejudices to reap a fortune.

Limbaugh wasn't motivated by trying to improve American government and culture. His personal life was more an example of self-serving hedonism than it was of any of the conservative "values" he pushed. He simply observed that there were few media outlets for those who felt bypassed and left out by the "establishment" and launched a network of mostly AM, small town radio stations whose revenue and listenership had been sagging and build enough of a niche to make himself rich. Over time, wannabees scooped up some of the overflow.

Limbaugh advocated for a no-compromise, no-negotiation stand on social issues, motivating people by their fears, their bigotry, their hatred and their lack of education. He dehumanized those he attacked, declaring them unequal and not worthy of the same rights as those who saw things the way he did. There's enough evidence from his past to believe that he was at least partially motivated by his own racist views, as much as he was by figuring out how to build a money-making media niche. If Trump saw him as worthy of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, that says a lot about just how much of a fascist bigot he really was.

how you are remembered and what changes you made in the world.

By that definition, Limbaugh went straight past Limbo; he's burning in Hell.
