(Tampa Bay Times) Where's the state's evidence for rejecting 54 math textbooks?

Where’s the state’s evidence for rejecting 54 math textbooks?
Tampa Bay Times, 4/18/2022

...

In its announcement last week, the state did not provide any specific examples of objectionable content from the books, nor when asked did officials fill in the obvious omission. No, no, no. Floridians can’t handle that kind of truth. How’s that for transparency?

The announcement — as transparent as a Russian press release — made it seem like state education officials were hiding something. Could that be? If the books were so offensive, if they were so chock-full of “prohibited topics,” plucking out a few examples of offending passages for us all to see would hardly have taken much effort. Instead we are left to imagine the possibilities, like these two we made up:

Offending question: A woman who committed a felony has served her time and wants to vote again, but first she wants to pay all her fines and fees, as the Legislature requires. How much does she owe? (Answer: Good question. Often, no one can say for sure.)

Offending question: At the end of March, the state had 5,145,983 registered Republicans and 5,034,448 registered Democrats. There are 28 congressional districts. How many seats should Republicans be favored to win? (Answer: 14. Wrong! You mistook this for a math question. It’s all about politics. Under Gov. Ron DeSantis’ personal congressional maps, Republicans would likely win 20 seats and Democrats 8.)

They don't need no stinking evidence!

(The Gainesville Sun) - "Louis XIV, France’s 17th century Sun King, believed in dictatorship by divine right — 'L'etat c'est moi,' his mythical quote, 'I am the state.' Apt words for Florida’s own Sun King, Gov. Ron DeSantis."

"DeSantis and his courtiers are willing to politicize Florida’s public schools, including teachers and students, for their own purposes, regardless of consequences (DeSantis’s deadly COVID policies come starkly to mind). For Florida’s Sun King, 'What’s best for DeSantis is best for Florida.'”

(when I was 47 years old I took calculus for fun. Really.) I can't begin to imagine how math could contain "critical race theory." Even those dreaded word problems in algebra weren't like that.

... on page 16 the textbook question involved finding the critical point of a function...

... on page 23 the textbook outlined the race strategy (Restate the Question, Answer the Question, Check Your Answer, Explain Your Reasoning)...

... on page 41 the textbook started discussing set theory...

It's pretty obvious, right there for all to see: critical race theory. Groomers brainwashed by the lamestream media just pretend they can't see it.

That is so exactly like the nonsense out there about some kind of secret messages encoded in the Bible that all I can do is giggle uncontrollably.

And here I was hoping you'd offer admiration for my taking calculus for fun at age 47.

But back to the topic of the thread...

It is remarkable that the government of Florida did not have examples prepared of why these textbooks were removed from their curriculum when that is the most obvious question the press would ask. Although it's not surprising.

I'm still curious to see some examples - not sure that will happen. It may take some investigative journalism from some local news outfit.

so thank you for posting them.

I frequently here refer to My Son The Astronomer. because he is in a PhD program in astronomy at George Mason University. His research is exoplanets. I often have questions about astronomy or cosmology, and he always, patiently, answers them for me.

He's a wonderful son and a wonderful astronomer.

Says that he will "bet me a shiny nickel," that DeSantis rejected those math books and went with ones from a publisher that's a political supporter/big donor. I hope that avenue is explored and investigated.

There are only two objectives of the "modern" republican party; money, and power.

If its economically feasible for republicans to dismiss 40% of modern mathematics textbooks then that's what they'll do. They don't care one bit about the educational content of said textbooks, as long as there's economic benefit to DeSantis and his coterie of yes-men.
