Can Trump Secret Service agent be forced to testify? Clinton's was
Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, gave stunning testimony Tuesday to the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
After President Donald Trumps speech at the Ellipse that day, he lunged at a Secret Service agent who refused to take him to the Capitol, she testified. Hutchinson was told of the incident by Anthony Ornato, a senior Secret Service official, minutes after it happened in the presence of the agent Trump allegedly attacked, who appeared to be shaken up, she testified.
The Twitter account for Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee immediately dismissed Hutchinsons testimony as hearsay.
The agent in question, Robert Engel, has already testified behind closed doors, Politico reported, though it did not include a description of this alleged altercation.

Said that Engel and the driver were both willing to testify, and would say that Trump never tried to grab the steering wheel.
EDIT: It is now being reported that this late news on Holt's broadcast probably isn't accurate.

(21,163 posts)I used to watch his show but stopped and switched to David Muir on ABC who is much better. My mother in law who lives in Arizona and used to watch Holt said one night she said no more and switched to ABCs Muir also! She Said she noticed NBC was becoming more right wing and ABC was more in the middle.

(130,974 posts)says the January 6th committee interviewed Ornato and Engel and nothing they said in interviews discredits Hutchinson. He also said he wouldnt go any further for now.

(12,586 posts)That doesn't matter. The 1/6 Committee is doing an in investigation, not a trial; think Columbo, not Perry Mason. Those who are watching the procedures are an audience, not a jury.

(50 posts)It's a heck of a long car and he was sitting right at the back. If he had got up, rushed forward and tried to get through to the driver (even assuming that there isn't a privacy/armoured glass screen there) then wouldn't there have been an almighty altercation with the other agent wrestling him on the floor? Obviously he threw a tantrum in the car, but maybe the physical altercation with the agents was less dramatic than suggested.
As I understood it Ms Hutchinson did not claim that the person who told her what had happened in the car was actually one of the agents involved, in which case it may well have been hearsay. It could have been third or fourth hand by the time she heard it with the story having been embellished or corrupted a little along the way. I dare say that tales of TFG's psychotic episodes were hot gossip amongst the White House staff so it would be easy to understand that happening.
It would be unfortunate if that one particularly sensational bit turned out to be demonstrably inaccurate, as that would certainly be used his apologists to cast doubt on the rest of the testimony. Obviously I hope these doubts are wrong, because the whole image is hilarious...

(50 posts)So numerous other Secret Service agents had heard the same story first hand, we are now hearing... I ought to have known that it was impossible for any story about TFG's behaviour to be too outrageous to be true!
