The Rudy Giuliani Joke Isn't Funny Anymore

Rudy Giuliani has been a national punchline for so long that the high hilarity that once accompanied his antics is finally no more.

Remember the time President Donald Trump’s former lawyer butt-dialed an NBC News reporter, not once but twice? Or his habit of mistakenly sending messages and photos to the wrong numbers? The time hair dye dripped down his temples like his head was melting? That weird Abraham Lincoln impersonation he did for a political ad? Sacha Baron Cohen pranking him in a movie? The deranged speech he gave last fall at a 9/11 memorial dinner and his denial that he was under the influence while giving it? The time he said $135,000 “isn’t pocket change, but it’s pretty close to it”? Or how about reporter Olivia Nuzzi’s hotel bar interview with Giuliani, his fly unzipped and drool inching down his face? His appearance on "The Masked Singer"?

These warm memories of Giuliani the political buffoon — the man willing to say stupid things in defense of Trump, the imaginative smear artist, the braying conspiracist, the muddled elderly man — have tickled us for so long. But the 78-year-old suffered such a chastening this week that human compassion demands that we stop laughing at the former mayor’s suffering and start sobbing instead. The man has become a pathetic spectacle, besieged on every front and humiliated at every juncture. Just give a gander at Rudy’s septimana horribilis.

In her Jan. 6 committee testimony, Cassidy Hutchinson said Giuliani requested a pardon. He tweeted a denial (which he then deleted) that seemed to imply that he asked for a pardon.

trump got ahold of him (and rudy let him) and ruined his reputation. rudy was a smart lawyer, should have known better, but I suspect that the drink was too much and sharing the white powder w/ tRUMP was too much to handle.

He ruined his reputation all by himself.

They've said that Rudy has always been a piece of shit. Before and after 9/11.

8. New Yorkers know that pre 9/11, Rudy was at the point of NO political future

He briefly was running for Senate (against HRC) AND simultaneously on the front of NYC tabloids for announcing to the media that he was divorcing his wife - before he told his wife. He continued to be on the cover arguing that his wife and kids should leave Gracie Manor , and then after that failed wanting to move Judith Nathan who was to become wife number 3 into the mansion with family. He then announced he was withdrawing from the race because he was diagnosed with prostate cancer --- but it was clearly because at that point he was unelectable.

Then after 9/11, he did rise to do what ANY REMOTELY competent leader would do. However, things he had done earlier - like putting a command center for crisis like this in the Trade Center building, ignoring it was a target already attacked once. (Wore his buddy Bernie McCarrick used it as a personal "love nest". Worse yet, Guiliani's administration approved new fire department radios that could not communicate with the police ones -- something leading to firemen continuing to go in, when the police called to get out as fast as possible.

NYC, however, focused on the future and worked to get past the horror. Guiliani, never a right wing favorite before, became a nationwide hero. However, he did not have the skill to politically capitalize on that and quickly was not a factor in the 2008 Republican party.

He had to know the insane arguments were not going to convince judges ... and it sure looks from your last paragraph that he did ask for a pardon -- and likely did not get paid or a pardon from Trump.

One thing to remember -- wasn't their a NYC mafia leader who faked mental problems to avoid conviction?

but, I do reap considerable schadenfreude from his stupid, stupid son's overwhelming defeat in NY Governor's primary.
