For 50 years Republicans have worked for this moment. Congress can make this moment short.

We need to keep this issue in the forefront.

I got as an email.

They did it. Today, the Supreme Court officially ruled to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Instantly abortion became illegal in 5 states. In just days, 11 more states will join them, all from laws already on the books. In the coming weeks, we can expect even more states as Republicans rush to pass new laws, likely making the right to choose illegal in more than half the country.

For 50 years Republicans have worked for this moment. Congress can make this moment short.

The House has already passed the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA) and even though the Senate voted it down last month, they can try again. Or the Senate could pass a stand alone bill with the singular focus just to restore abortion services to the standards set in place 50 years ago.

Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski said in a statement they would support legislation to “codify the Supreme Court’s rulings in Roe v. Wade and the 1992 case Planned Parenthood v. Casey, while preserving states’ rights to enact abortion-related statutes that comply with those rulings.” That’s much weaker than the WHPA, but it’s a lot better than nothing.

More than ever, we must fight back to restore access to reproductive freedom. Send a direct message to your senators and demand they codify the right to a safe and legal abortion now!

While Roe v. Wade has been the law of the land for 49 years, that has not guaranteed access to abortion care. Even before the Supreme Court’s ruling, abortion has been out of reach for many people -- especially people who already face systemic barriers to healthcare, such as Black, Indigenous, low-wealth, and LGBTQ+ communities.

This decision will only make the injustice of unequal access worse.

While the Supreme Court’s decision may not threaten abortion rights in every state, millions of people across the country instantly lost the right to abortion care. In those states, only those who can afford to take time off of work, travel to another state, and likely stay at least one night in a hotel will be able to receive the healthcare they need.

The Senate can restore the right to choose -- either by passing the WHPA or with a new law limited to just codify the protections set in place by the Roe v. Wade ruling nearly 50 years ago. It’s up to us to demand they do it now!

Thank you for everything you do in the fight for justice.
