What sorcery was used to get people to buy Big Lie?

The earth is flat. The Titanic was unsinkable. Columbus discovered America. Covid will just, “disappear.” Cigarettes don’t cause cancer. “I did not have sex with that woman.” The Confederacy fought for states’ rights. Buzz Aldrin’s moon landing was faked. “I am not a crook.” Washington chopped down the cherry tree. Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.

These are some of the “best” lies ever in our history, along with “climate change is a hoax,” the FBI planted evidence at Mar-a-Lago, and the reason for the search there was a “hoax.”

Now some of these lies are merely “cute,” ala Washington’s cherry tree; but cause great harm, great pain, financial disaster, and even death, such as those about covid, Iraq or smoking.

-snip-

But the lie that has me stumped, and most desperate to find the pathology behind, is the lie that’s foundational to the entire Magic-MAGA world: That Trump actually won the 2020 election and only voter fraud kept him from the presidency.

the propaganda is the endless repetition of the lie.

the megaphone is fox news and hate radio and all the big lie politicians - and all the media that plays it endlessly.

Therefore he could not lose unless the election was rigged.

Trump took advantage of appearances on election night. Republican votes came in first because most of them voted in person. That gave Trump the appearance of being in the lead everywhere.

A huge number of Democrats voted by mail. Their votes took longer to count. Every time another batch of Dem mail in ballots was brought in to election centers for counting, Trump's lead slipped. So he took advantage of how it looked and said that the mail in ballots were fake and were "dumped" as part of a fraud.

People who wanted him to win believed it and it looked credible to them. Most people do not know the tight safeguards on mail ballots, so it was easy for Trump supporters to believe that the paper ballots were fraudulent. They saw it right before their eyes. Trump had the lead and then it fell. They saw ballots being brought in.

Plus, they were primed for months before the election to believe that it would be rigged.

Especially since the media they consume is filled with lies. For whatever reason, when a lie is believed, the tendency of the believer is to cling to the lie like a life raft. Admit you made a mistake and you may drown.

Human nature? No, I don't think so, because sensible people will listen to all sides and give credence to solid evidence. His followers are more like religious fanatics or cult worshippers. Their dear leader can do or say no wrong, especially since they've been brainwashed to believe that anything said against said dear leader is obviously an attack and therefore is false. Idiot logic, but here we are.

The sore losers thought that the election was rigged, and the big lie merely vindicated what they already thought.
