My own prohibitive and embarrassing student loan story

Let me say that I will try to be brief (while telling the whole story) and none of this is Whoa is me BS. This is my story of my decisions.

It took me 10 years to get my accounting degree. The last 5 semesters were brutal both in time and personal relationships. I busted my ass. I had no idea until fairly recently that I was part of the 1/3 of most of my classes who passed courses. I was super driven and figure we were all going for A’s.
That 10 years included 2 1/2 years of just working, 1 year of a 40 hour a week job AND school, and 3 years in the Army where I picked up 10 credits.
The GI Bill gave me $715 a month - have at it food rent and school if anything is left.
My first 2 years were at a $7K/year private mostly party school. I paid as I went at a cheap commuter school in the middle. I think $2-2,500 a semester at the end which was pretty reasonable for the mid-90’s.

I paid here and there. Hey it was the 90’s and there was fun to be had. I had fun. I was very irresponsible on paying on my loan. In 2009 it was time to be responsible. I called DOE and got on a payment plan. $270 a month. Never missed a payment until 2020 when payments stopped.

In total I figure that I borrowed $25,000.
Not bad really.

To date from 2009 until as things stand now I have paid $34,000. Okay.

My balance on my loans as of today is......$34,000.

Currently at 0% internet but the 6+% will kick back in next year I’d assume.

I have no idea if my story is typical and I don’t care. It’s my doing and that’s it.
I have applied for a service forgiveness. I’ve worked at several public and charity operations. We’ll see.

good/bad... it's our story... similiar to you, my loans were about the same 25k... today I owe over 60k scared I couldn't pay and clueless... went into default 30+ years ago. tried to make it right when working and paid religiously when I could... fines, fees, etc. later here I am... I was a caregiver most of those years and caregivers don't make enough (usually $0) to pay back student loans... So, like you I paid back the original loan, but it means nothing... fortunately, my loans will die with me.

Small business people pay crazy amounts of taxes but the system completely relies on them.

Caregivers. I have experience with family and in a professional setting with Huntington’s Disease. Caregivers are completely out of sight but the system relies on them. THAT is a group I’d go Jon Stewart on. Amazing people. Thank you.

I only took out loans the last 2years of my doctorate
I borrowed 24k.
By the time I was through and it was time to begin payments, I owed 36k.
I paid about $350 a month for TEN YEARS
My balance was then 34k.
We sat down and looked at this scam...obviously jiggered to be lifetime repayments.
We refinanced the house to pay it off.

It’s a total scam

I believe your story is the reason for student loan forgiveness. Only $2K principal paid after 10 years IS a scam. Means $40K went to interest payments, only $2K to principal. What a business.

I only borrowed 8K and have paid 11k but still owe 16k. I'm 56 years old and felt like I would just have to die before this thing get paid off.
