Pregnant women held for months in one Alabama jail to protect fetuses from drugs

https://www.al.com/news/2022/09/pregnant-women-held-for-months-in-one-alabama-jail-to-protect-fetuses-from-drugs.html

Police arrested Ashley Banks on May 25 with a small amount of marijuana and a pistol without a permit to carry.

Under normal circumstances, the 23-year-old from Gadsden would have been able to post bond and leave jail until her criminal trial. But Banks admitted to smoking pot on the same day she found out she was pregnant – two days before her arrest. In Etowah County, that meant she couldn’t leave jail unless she entered drug rehab, leaving her in limbo for three months.

She’s not the only one, according to attorneys involved in her case. Several pregnant women and new moms accused of exposing their fetuses to drugs have been held for weeks or months inside the Etowah County Detention Center under special bond conditions that require rehab and $10,000 cash.

Attorneys with National Advocates for Pregnant Women, an organization that opposes laws that criminalize pregnancy, say it’s unfair to impose special conditions on pregnant women who haven’t been convicted of any crimes. ....

The Fascists would arrest pregnant women but you didn’t believe us.

Now you know. Let’s fix this before women start dying.

Red states cover-up, just like with COVID and gun violence, rapes and incest.

Jailing them for months automatically means forcing them to give birth whether they want to or not because it will be too late to have an abortion. Given the trajectory of laws and behaviors toward pregnant women (and LGBTQ) in red states, I expect them only to get worse and it will not be safe for many women and LGBTQ to live there. Already, families with trans kids are having to move out of states like Texas where trans families are being investigated for child abuse and possible removal of children from the family.

The only women who will be safe in these states are those financially able to do what they want and the extremist evangelical women who like being chattel and want to have babies every 8 months or so.

In one sense, we already have divided ourselves into two countries with the federal government being in the middle of a rope pulling contest. One thing I really want Democrats to do, though I doubt they will, is end the federal subsidizing of low taxes and bad laws in red states by blue states. Republicans deliberately keep their tax rates low for the wealthy and their wages at poverty levels because that’s how they get more federal dollars—dollars that often go to the wealthy rather than the poor. I wish I did not despise Republicans quite as much as I do now, but they have just become despicable human beings.

Their policies favoring the rich directly contributed The Great Depression.

They tried to prevent FDR from rescuing the working and middle class in the 1930's during the Depression.

They largely supported Isolationists just prior to Pearl Harbor who also supported the Fascist Movements in Europe.

The McCarthy Red Witch hunt in the 1950's that destroyed countless lives.

Instead of letting the racist Dixiecrats wither away in the 1960's, the Rethugs welcomed those Jim Crow racists in the party in the late 1960's /1970's.

Nixon and his cruel criminal administration.

Raygun. Integration of the hypocritical, rascist & misogynistic christoFascist movement into the R party under the guise of 'Conservative Christianity'

Newt and the false Contract with America. Newt has stated he HATES democracy. The destruction of the Constitution starts with Newt.

GW Bush's and his administration's War Crimes. And his DOJ's lack of emphasis on known terrorism, instead concentrating on covering up nude statues in DC.

McConnel's Cruel regime in the US Senate

Investigations and lawsuits headed their way. The county and other governments may have to dissolve in order to correct that issue and cover the legal fines.
