Democrats fear the midterm map is slipping away

Democrats fear the midterm map is slipping away

Polls in both the House and Senate show improvements for Republicans amid economic and crime concerns

By Michael Scherer
October 23, 2022 at 7:00 a.m. EDT

The liberal Navigator public tracking poll flashed a major warning sign for Democrats in mid-October, reporting a 20 percentage point jump since September in the share of independent voters concerned about the economy and gas prices. ... That was not the only data showing a turning of the tide in the battle for Congress. Regional challenges had shown up in internal Democratic polls from deep blue sanctums in the Pacific Northwest, New York and even Rhode Island, Democratic strategists say. Crime, a major focus of Republican advertising, has also risen as a major issue in several races.

Candidates say they have felt the ground shift. ... “The economic concern is definitely worse, and I think that is probably part of what has corroded concern about abortion rights,” said Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, 34, a Democratic candidate for Congress in southern Washington State.

{snip}

Rather than expanding their ambitions, Democratic strategists are now trying to keep voters, donors and volunteers from losing their nerve. Though there is wide agreement that the environment has deteriorated in recent weeks, it is far stronger for Democrats than it was in the spring, they argue.

{snip}

The shift has happened even as Democrats have devoted enormous amounts of money to advertising on the issue of abortion and the Supreme Court’s June decision overruling abortion rights in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. ... “The entire issue set is working against us. It is really hard for a Democrat in a marginal district,” said another Democratic House strategist, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to speak frankly. “There was a lot of attention on abortion immediately post-Dobbs. As time has passed the immediacy has dissipated. The everyday reality of buying gas and buying groceries has overtaken it.”

But if they aren't it won't be the first time we have had to deal with this BS. It has been a struggle for the last 50 years but what is sad is that we are seeing some of the hard won issues being overturned and it seems so corrupt - even scary.

I hope the real "silent majority" surprises all the pundits. It would be such a relief and so inspiring to see that our nation is better than the nastiness of the last few years.

Autocratic party openly trying to overthrow an election nd democracy altogether? The 2017-2019 majority didn't have nearly the level of psychos as this majority would.

If you want to stop it, knock on as many doors as possible. Especially on EDay

It’s hard to campaign on lowering inflation because inflation went up under democratic leadership. I recognize it’s not at all our fault and that it’s largely corporate greed but still, it’s hard to run on. Roe is the one thing that can offset inflation and crime concerns.

but when every damned pundit on this morning's early cable newscasts is promoting it as absolute truth, it depresses turnout and I'm damned sick of it.

My fantasy to all who promote such as an absolute truth prior to a single vote having been counted:

On-topic, for you: I had the misfortune of viewing part of a Steven Seagal movie on TV yesterday. It was set in Memphis, and he had a Memphis accent. Sort of. I mean, as much of a Memphis accent as Steven Seagal was capable of.

I forgot the name.

See ya.

The MSM with clickbait headlines. Normalizing tfg's behavior was bad enough. Softening the ground for massive election fuckery is likely. Somehow I think Kansas is the canary in the coal mine - for decency in our national soul. The boomer vote used to favor repubs. These nazi fucks aren't repubs. The boomers remember nazis. I sure hope so.

The average American doesn't have (or take) the time to follow the nuances of politics the way most here do.

Many in rural areas have no cable or internet & are captives of corporate media.

Fkd up situation. But I suppose this is what happens when there isn't much passion for problem solving or helping to make the world a better place. Just greed.

Keep the faith!

amazing how the MSM talking mouths spout CW (conventional wisdom) when, in a post-covid/January 6 world CW no longer applies...the millennials get their info from podcasts, TikTok, social media platforms..they "live" on their cellphones, block numbers not on their contacts list (pollsters can't reach them), and regard CNN/MSNBC and their hosts and go-to contributing consultants as boring and irrelevant..and I agree...

that the party in power always loses the midterms. These news outlets always focus on their polls, ignoring averages and other polls that don't support their contention. It draws readers.

Just go out and vote.
