German authorities are investigating an incident in which swastikas and other Nazi symbols were spray painted on signs at a former concentration camp. German authorities on Friday began an investigation into an incident where traffic signs and a map at the former Buchenwald concentration camp were smeared with swastikas and other Nazi symbols.

Police said two traffic signs and a sign with a map of the memorial were spray-painted with the symbols Thursday evening. All the signs smeared with Nazi graffiti were removed.

The Buchenwald and Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation, which runs the memorial site, said it was appalled by the incident and called it an "abhorrent attack on the dignity of the Nazis' victims and on our work."

The incident comes after seven trees dedicated to the memory of victims of the Nazi-era concentration camp were chopped down in July.

I've seen young people readjust their attitudes after watching movies of the killing machine in action.

An English bulldozer pushing hundreds of bodies into a hole because the devastation was too massive for a more humanistic handling. Seeing people shot and pushed in the ditches was breathtaking, but that bulldozer made the total horror just too undeniable for me at 12.

I've seen the tattoos, I've talked to an awful lot of survivors. My best friend's total family, all from Poland, was reduced to 10 people spread from Ecuador to Montreal. His two cousins and sister were born in a West German DP camp his mother, father and aunt and uncle had walked to from their home in Poland - after they had walked to from Auschwitz first to recover possessions they had buried under the floorboards of their home.

Just no tolerance for this sort of desecration or for those who perpetrate it. Not a gram of tolerance.




Irvin once told me his mother had caught Irvin at four years old, just after his father died, putting money between the floorboards in the dining room of their house in Akron. I always have cherished this story - I've wondered if he were reliving a genetic memory from his parents' struggles.

He passed four years ago, almost exactly, and I will never be able to forget him or his mother and his family. He gave me a photo of his mother and aunts in Warsaw in '36, and it is a haunting photograph of four young women enjoying their freedom (wearing newsboy caps, knee pants and smoking cigarettes and having big grins).
