AOC and Bernie Sanders issue stark warning on Canada wildfires
115 million Americans under air quality alerts
(snip)
It bears repeating how unprepared we are for the climate crisis, New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter on Wednesday, referencing the smoke and recent soaring temperatures in Puerto Rico. We must adapt our food systems, energy grids, infrastructure, healthcare, etc ASAP to prepare for whats to come and catch up to what is already here.
Fellow progressive Bernie Sanders sounded a similar note, writing on Twitter: Right now, 98 MILLION people on the East Coast are under air quality alerts from Canadian fires and, last night, NYC had the worst air quality in the world.
Climate change makes wildfires more frequent and widespread, he added. If we do nothing, this is our new reality. Its time to act.

Scientists also said the wildfire problems were a sign of the climate crisis thats already here, and a preview of the sorts of conditions that will come if changes arent made.

(30,736 posts)We have DU members who like to trumpet anything those two say. I will look to our actual leadership for statements.
President Biden is our leader. Schumer is our leader in the Senate, and Hakeem Jeffries in the house. Their statements and actions carry actual weight. We are lucky to have such responsible leadership.
Biden is sending actual assets to help fight the fires. That counts for more than making statements to the newspapers. He knows about climate change. Biden is doing something in the short term to fight the effects of climate change by sending actual help to Canada.

As nothing on Earth threatens human health more than the existential threat of climate change, I will post everything that political leader has to say on the subject.... and for that matter anyone else that touts the message.
If President Biden, Senator Schumer or Congressman Jeffries have something to say about the threat of climate change and how it's tied to forest fires, by all means start an OP and I will recommend it instead of trashing you or those political leaders for doing so.
Sending assets to help fight forest fires is a good thing in the same sense that putting a tourniquet on a gushing wound is essential but you can't leave a tourniquet on too long because it only treats the symptoms of the wound (that being the loss of blood) and eventually will cause harm to the body in itself.
Until the root or cause of the disease (global warming climate change) is aggressively addressed, things will only get worse.

(10 posts)I don't understand why you would say "only left wing 'progressives' see and call this out? Telling..."
I didn't see anything in the article that suggests that, so I don't understand why you are saying that.
Not trying to attack you in any way. Just looking for some clarity.
