Excerpt:
Symbolism in currency often serves as a reflection of cultural values. Mao Tse-Tungs face on the Chinese Yuan asserts the Chinese governments faith in communist theory. The Canadian 10 dollar note carries a portrait of Sir John A. MacDonald paired with the image of a train on the back of the note reflecting Canadian pride both in the nations first prime minister and in the Canadian Pacific Railway. It is noteworthy that most discussion of the symbolism contained within American currency focuses on the lofty ideals portrayed on the back of bank notes while addressing the faces on the front in only the most cursory and superficial of ways. Understanding the import of symbols contained within American currency, however, requires understanding the significance of the portraits as well as the christian nationalist, masonic, and enlightenment ideals referenced in the Great Seal on the back of the dollar bill. Just as the pairing of John A. MacDonalds portrait with the image of a train links the tale of Canadas first prime minister to the tale describing the creation of the Canadian Pacific Railway, so the pairing of American portraits with other symbols used in currency links the story of American leaders to the history of the nation.
