Republican Senate candidates rush to defend IVF after Alabama ruling
(NBC) A growing number of Republican candidates for Senate are defending in vitro fertilization treatment after a ruling by the Alabama Supreme Court last week threatened to curtail access to the treatment.
While most Republican lawmakers have remained largely silent on the issue, GOP Senate candidates issued a wave of statements in defense of the treatment on Friday, the same day Trump urged the Alabama legislature to nullify the rulings effects.
Nevada Senate GOP candidate Sam Brown referred to IVF as "a blessing" for many families, Tim Sheehy, who is running for Senate in Montana, called it a path for families to grow and thrive, Pennsylvania Senate candidate Dave McCormick, lauded the treatment as "a ray of hope," and Arizona Senate candidate Kari Lake praised it "extremely important" for helping countless people become parents.

(10,192 posts)I've only known one couple who had a child using IVF. They also paid a surrogate mother to carry the "baby" because the wife couldn't do so. It was a "blessing" for them, but the entire process cost them a bundle.
Depending on the clinic, IVF treatments can cost as much as $30,000. They're not covered by most insurance plans and often multiple treatments are usually necessary. It's not something lower income people can typically afford.
I suspect Republicans are worried because this Alabama ruling could affect their constituency the most.

(4,426 posts)Blastocyst personhood is the nightmare scenario for every hospital, clinic and insurance company lawyer in every state that doesnt explicitly protect the right to choose. The state legislatures and governors in most of these places are incapable of drafting and passing legislation to undo this tangle.
It IS going to affect not only IVF and abortion for ANY reason, but also most forms of birth control. The prohibition of these things is baked into the Alabama court decision. They cannot be separated as long as this religiously insane definition of personhood is allowed to stand.
SCOTUS isnt going to do that. And all the statements of support from these hypocritical GOP fucks isnt going to do it either.
