Thousands of Russians moved to Sri Lanka to avoid conscription after the outbreak of war, tried to implement their own

Well, I would ask-force these bigots who want whites only also.

Thousands of Russians moved to Sri Lanka to avoid conscription after the outbreak of war, tried to implement their own version of apartheid - banning locals from the businesses they set up - and are now being deported.

...............But thousands of Russians and smaller numbers of Ukrainians are believed to have settled in Sri Lanka, some to avoid potential draft into the army.

Some who stayed have started restaurants and set up nightclubs.

The government decision coincided with a furious social media backlash against a Russian-run nightclub which had organized a "whites-only" party in the southern coastal resort town of Unawatuna.

Sri Lanka sought to boost tourism by granting 30-day visas on arrival, as the country desperately needed foreign exchange as it recovers from its worst economic crisis since mid-2022...........

Even in crisis-hit Sri Lanka, Oleg feels safer

Oleg was an anti-Putin activist in Russia before the war.

As a member of the LGBTQI community, he had been vocal about changes to the country's constitution that banned same-sex marriage in 2020.

"I understood it was very dangerous to stay in Russia because I was in opposition to the political regime, which is why I decided to move away as fast as I could," he said.

Oleg spoke to the ABC just metres away from where protests have been happening in the capital Colombo every day. ...........................................................
